The Noun Project: The bank of free icons

Icons are increasingly part of our way of communicating with friends and sometimes even in certain professions. However, nowadays, multiple platforms propose themselves as an icon bank and The Noun Project is one of them.

Launched in 2010 by Scott thomas et Sofia Polyakov who are the CEOs, it is defined as a catalog that collects symbols based on visual communication. Graphic designers from several countries participate. This is an image library available to anyone looking for a graphic symbol.

The Noun Project is a graphic art library accessible to millions of designers, architects, graphic designers and web designers looking for an ideogram based on the visual communication of activities. It's easy to use with handy, easy-to-grasp apps and tools.

Discover The Noun Project

This icon bank is a service that provides more than 2 million icons created by a community of developers around the world. When you visit the site, you can enter keywords in the search bar. Then, by default, a large selection of black and white icons is provided. You can access a collection of different icons grouped by theme related to your search.

Once you've selected a file, you can change its slant, orientation, or color. You can also add different shapes of colored backgrounds before downloading in SVG or PNG format. Please note that you must first register on the site and create an account to receive the final content. Also, only paid plan owners can download the modified icon. Users of the free version only have access to the standard version and must consult the author's credits each time they use the work.

For those with special needs, The Noun Project offers an online portfolio with prepaid credits for the one-time purchase of custom files. A simple and useful tool for web designers and graphic designers looking for a solution offering a wide variety of original icons.

Users' review

I would not use this site to teach a subject, but to practice a concept. The symbols are grouped in one place and they are free. You can also pay to create other favorite folders, but I don't mind doing some research. I wouldn't mind creating colored folders, but the symbols are usually black and white.

For Friendly and comfortable working environment; great people; typical 40-hour work weeks; competitive salary; emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Drawbacks The vacation time is a bit short (but there is a long vacation closing time that is not taken into account); the transition to remote work was a little difficult, but nothing unexpected.

For
I love the cohesive aesthetic of The Noun Project. There are also tons of options available for each project. I'm always amazed at how easy it is to implement, especially for web design projects.
Reviews collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Drawbacks
Like any library, there are limitations when it comes to finding the exact icon you are looking for. However, I would say that The Noun Project covers 95% of our projects and I am extremely grateful to the designers and the teams who make it possible.

For
The Noun Project makes it super easy and quick to find icons for mockups, websites, or class work. The interface is simple and organized, making it easy to quickly find an icon and assess if it suits my purpose due to the color palette. The variety of photos in the Noun Project is also excellent.
Reviews collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Drawbacks
I wish there was a way to hover over an icon and save it to favorites or highlight the icons on a page so I can make a selection from those that are highlighted. In fact, all you need to do is quickly choose an icon from a collection.

For One of the big trends in data visualization today is the use of icons. It is possible to simplify the text of a Powerpoint slide or a one-pager by using icons. However, subscriptions to services that provide icons can often be expensive. Enter the Noun project. Most icons are free to download, subject to certain rules regarding attribution to the author; customization of an icon is chargeable. And what's honestly the best part is that a lot of these icons look really good.
Reviews collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Drawbacks
To customize an icon, you have to pay ($2,99). Customization can include color change, background change and rotation. When you pay the price, you are no longer obligated to attribute the author. If you use a lot of icons in a presentation, it can be expensive and takes away some of the value of the free principle.

Hard to believe, but true. I had an academic career very far from journalism or even web writing, but at the end of my studies, I discovered this passion for writing. I had to train myself and today I am doing a job that has fascinated me for two years. Although unexpected, I really like this job.
