Youtubeur Guide: How to get started on YouTube?

YouTube has become a real social phenomenon.

Youtubeur Guide: How to get started on YouTube?
Youtubeur Guide: How to get started on YouTube?

YouTube has become a real social phenomenon. And the activity of youtubeur is now for some a profession in its own right. What kind of videos can it be good to make for someone starting this business nowadays?

What is YouTube?

In 2002, eBay, the auction giant, bought PayPal, which operates an Internet payment system. Like other early workers, programmers Steve Chen and Jawed Karim and graphic designer Chad Hurley end up with a nice jackpot. And they want to create their own start-up.

However, the 1er February 2004, an episode had marked America. During the Super Bowl ceremony - the most watched show by Americans - Janet Jackson had engaged in a duet in the company of singer Timberlake. During this performance, by mistake, Timberlake had torn off a piece of the singer's bustier, thus revealing for a few brief seconds the left breast of the latter to 90 million American viewers!

Subsequently, Jawed Karim tried to find this sequence on the Internet, and it was not easy. The idea then came to him: what if there was a site where everyone could download videos? He confided in Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, and the idea for YouTube emerged.

At that time, Steve Chen had just joined another start-up that was to become famous: Facebook. So he explained to his boss, Matt Cohler, that he was going to start his own business. Cohler did his best to explain to him that he was releasing the prey for the shade, but to no avail.

YouTube officially premiered on February 14, 2005. And the very first video, Me at the zoo, was posted precisely on April 23 at 20:27 p.m. by Jawed Karim. In the San Diego Zoo (California), standing in front of the elephant section, he explains that these animals really have long proboscis. The clip is 18 seconds long. Due to its historical value, it has exceeded 100 million views.

Me at the Zoo: The very first video posted on YouTube.

At that time, the site was still only experimental. A beta (intermediate) version was launched in May 2005. The official launch did not take place until November.

In fact, YouTube has taken off very quickly. Curiously, the NBC television channel indirectly gave it a boost: in February 2006, it ordered YouTube to remove from its site extracts of broadcasts of the Winter Olympics that Internet users had posted. The site managers complied, but this event put their start-up in the spotlight. Indeed, the press echoed the incident.

Soon enough, YouTube's popularity grew so strong with younger audiences that NBC changed its policy. Why not capitalize on the attractiveness of the site to attract young people to its productions? NBC decided, in June 2006, to enter into an agreement with the start-up. She created her own channel on YouTube, in order to broadcast extracts from series like The Office.

The first video to exceed one million views

In July 2006, a video first reached one million views on YouTube. In this commercial shot by Nike, Brazilian soccer player Ronaldinho is seen donning a pair of the equipment manufacturer's shoes, testing their effect on a ball in elegant style and delivering a few masterful shots.

At a time when social networks were still underdeveloped, the buzz was born spontaneously via sending e-mails.

The YouTube craze seemed to indicate that the era of internet video streaming had arrived. Moreover, from the month of July, Google creates its own competing service: Google Videos.

However, from the start, YouTube had based its economic model on advertising, and this allowed it to quickly garner significant revenues, in the order of $ 20 million per month.

From October 2006, YouTube.com has become one of the busiest sites. He already claimed 100 million clips viewed per day. In an era when video on the Web was just getting off the ground, it appeared that a majority of Internet users had chosen YouTube as their platform of choice.

Very quickly, large companies offered to absorb the young start-up. Among the contenders were Microsoft, Yahoo !, Viacom (owner of MTV) and News Corporation. But it is Google that will win the bet with formidable efficiency.

At the beginning of October 2006, the company bought YouTube for an amount worthy of the heyday of the Internet bubble: 1,65 billion dollars. Google had not hesitated to offer a highly overvalued sum in order to eliminate any competing offer.

YouTube arrived in France in June 2007.

The popularity of YouTube has been such that Google could only congratulate itself on making such a takeover:

  • In October 2008, YouTube claimed 100 million videos viewed per day. A year later, the frequency was 1 billion.
  • As of 2010, the figures were impressive: with 2 million videos viewed daily, YouTube had an audience twice that of the three main American television channels.
  • In early 2012, YouTube could boast of accumulating 4 billion views per day. It was in July of that year that a video first hit one billion views, with the clip G from Korean singer Psy.
  • In September 2014, the site claimed 831 million regular users. The billion mark was crossed in 2015.
  • In March 2020, according to the Médiamétrie institute, YouTube had 2 billion users per month, worldwide.
  • 41,7 million French people aged 18 and over watched a video on YouTube in the same month of March 2020.

You would have thought that YouTube was just a video sharing site. But gradually, a phenomenon has emerged: YouTube has given rise to full-fledged stars.

The new fact was that YouTubers often started out in their bedroom and thus conquered their audience on their own. In fact, it's unheard of!

In August 2013, the young PewDiePie's channel became the one with the most subscribers in the world (numbering 10 million). It also stood out for its ultra-rapid growth, with just under 19 million subscribers at the end of 2013.

New codes have emerged to judge the performance of new videos by artists such as Lady Gaga: the number of views, likes, shares has become the new criterion.

In France, the impact of YouTube on the young population emerged in March 2016 during an annual survey conducted by the Ipsos institute to Mickey's Diary. The magazine wanted to know who were the favorite personalities of 7-14 year olds.

In 2015, actor Kev Adams was at the top of the podium. However, in 2016, two YouTubers stole the show by signing up respectively no 1 and no 2, while they were absent from the top 10 the previous year: Cyprien and Norman.

Their arrival at the top of this ranking has consecrated a new deal: YouTube has become the place where new stars are created.

Such is the impact of this new medium: stars hatch on their own, without having gone through the usual circuit of producers or agents. Personalities like EnjoyPhoenix, Squeezie, Natoo or Axolot have become famous thanks to the video platform, attracting to them a very large audience, which spontaneously adopted them. Another notable fact: these star YouTubers derive a somewhat negligible income from this activity.

Little by little, traditional institutions have become aware of the weight of this new medium, and more particularly with the “young” audience. On May 25, 2019, on the sidelines of the European elections, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron chose to deliver an interview to YouTuber Hugo Travers, then 22 years old.

This Sciences-Po student had created his channel four years earlier with the aim of getting young people interested in current affairs. The interview collected 450 views in 000 hours.

In reality, we are dealing with a new phenomenon: anyone, if they have a certain talent or have expertise in a field, can make themselves known on a large scale. The basic hardware is simple, since a smartphone is enough to get started.

YouTube also has a magical side. As soon as it is uploaded, a video can be watched by hundreds or thousands of Internet users! And, while it traditionally took weeks or months, or even more, to get a feedback audience, in the case of YouTube, it only takes a few minutes to collect the first reactions through likes or comments.

YouTube has changed the rules of the game and reinforced a situation that we had already seen elsewhere on the Web: the simple individual has taken power. Everyone can freely produce their own content. Judgment comes from the public and no longer from established institutions.

On YouTube, a bit like television, you can have access to channels. A channel designates all the videos offered by a YouTuber. Each time he adds a clip, it enriches his channel.

If we like a channel, we may want to subscribe to it, so that YouTube regularly offers us new content.

Subscribers first numbered in the hundreds, then in the thousands. Very quickly, these figures "exploded". Nowadays, it is common, when interviewing a celebrity on television or on the radio, to quote the number of subscribers of his channel. The new standard of popularity can now be found on YouTube.

  • In 2015, more than 85 YouTube channels had at least one million subscribers in France.
  • In 2019, more than 300 channels had exceeded one million subscribers in France1.

The status of YouTuber has something to seduce. The prospect of being able to offer one's creations to a large audience is appealing to say the least. And the prospect of being able to make a living from it - even if it only concerns a small number of YouTubers - is just as attractive.

The fact remains that today, the competition has become enormous. The quality of the productions of personalities like Cyprien or specialized channels like Professor Feuillage (on ecology) is extremely high.

Nowadays, YouTube offers myriads of professionally shot footage. Some YouTubers travel with teams that provide various positions: filming, sound recording, make-up ...

But is the time when one could hope to break through from his room over? Not necessarily. If you have a real talent, for example a humorist, it is not impossible to get noticed. At all times, there is room for new YouTubers, and at least four factors go in this direction:

  • First, star YouTubers, eager to move on, ended up easing off. This is particularly the case of Norman or PewDiePie. By withdrawing in this way, they create a call for air for new stars.
  • Generations follow one another and, by nature, everyone likes to elect their own heroes or leaders, generally different personalities from those that their elders may have appreciated. So, new star YouTubers are expected to emerge.
  • While the quality of videos has improved significantly, the cost of equipment has fallen sharply, and many accessories that were once very expensive are now more affordable.
  • YouTube's audience keeps growing and, therefore, it opens the way to more and more "niches". It is quite possible to reach thousands or tens of thousands of people interested in a subject that you master, in a cause that you defend or more simply by your talent, whether comic or otherwise.

YouTube, by nature, is open to everyone. And in this book, we give you the keys to success, most often gathered during interviews with great YouTubers: how to present yourself, how to set the scene for your videos, how to make the best use of light, why you need special care sound recording, etc.

Let's start with the beginning. First and foremost, it is essential to choose the channel you want to host. This is the subject of the next section.

The main categories on YouTube

When YouTube started out, some were able to establish themselves with generalist channels, mainly on the basis of their personality.

That time seems over. These days, it is difficult to hope to build a faithful community if one does not choose from the start to fall into a given category.

If your goal is to attract a large community to you, then it seems safer, at least to begin with, to stick to a specific theme.

Strings typically have one of the following characteristics:

  • To entertain : make people laugh, have a good time.
  • Instruct: to discover a subject, a skill.
  • Motivate: inspire others to take action.

Let's take these three points by putting ourselves in the shoes of the one who visits YouTube. He usually goes to this platform to:

  • To be entertained. To discover sketches, stories, video game demonstrations, interesting testimonials ...
  • Learn. To plant daffodils, learn a little-known function of Word, build a garden shed, discover how a lock works ...
  • To motivate oneself. To participate in actions to help the planet, connect with other people concerned by the same causes ...

Once this preamble is in place, what are the main categories of YouTube channels?

Humor is the most popular category in France. The most popular channels in April 2020 were:

  1. Squeezie - nearly 15 million subscribers. Squeezie (real name Lucas Hauchard) started in 2008 with clips dedicated to video games before expanding its audience by touching humor, and by presenting itself under the pseudonym Squeezie. He became number one on YouTube in 2019, thus managing to overtake Cyprien who was for a long time alone on the podium. One of the characteristics of Squeezie, in addition to his great freedom of speech, is to have been able to retain his audience by posting videos very regularly. He was even the first to surpass one million subscribers when he was only 17 (in 2013). Squeezie also stood out in television interviews that highlighted the disconnect that could exist between the generation of YouTubers and those that came before it.
  2. Cyprien - 13,5 million subscribers. Cyprien broke through by staging a lot of situations of our time, sometimes in a context business (like his video on meetings), and it reaches, by necessity, a very large audience.
  3. Norman makes videos - 11,9 million subscribers. Norman Thavaud was one of the stars of the years 2010-2020 thanks to a large number of very funny videos based on his daily life, relationships with his family or his friends. He managed to be touching and, therefore, to create attachment. However, he has strongly eased the foot as far as YouTube is concerned and even, rightly or wrongly, distances himself from this medium which has allowed him to be known.
  4. Rémi Gaillard - 6,98 million subscribers. Rémi Gaillard has adopted a completely different approach. Openly crazy, he stages himself in bewildering situations. We can see him in "bat" mode, hanging from the ceiling of an elevator by his feet, karting at high speed on a usual road, disguised as a kangaroo wandering in a small town, spraying a passerby, or on a beach, spreading sand on a vacationer… Its territory is that of provocation and it has thus taken over a niche previously occupied by Michaël Youn on M6.
  5. Le Rire jaune - 5,12 million subscribers. Le Rire jaune is a comedy duo - an often paying formula - made up of brothers Kevin Kē Wěi Tran and Henry Kē Liáng Tran. This is a duo, certainly very nice and full of energy, but with a very classic style of humor. The fact remains that their popularity attests that they hit the mark with a large audience.
  6. Nattoo - 5,07 million subscribers. Nattoo is the first woman of the lot. Pretty, endearing and with a gift for self-mockery, she produces very professional and impactful clips. The original point for her is that she was engaged in a career in the police force before creating her YouTube channel in 2011, and making it a full-time activity the following year.

In this same niche, we can cite Andy, an ex-model who knew how to use her advantageous plastic to make us laugh by staging herself with verve in real-life situations: her meetings on Tinder, the management of her boyfriend's ex. , the first date, what if Barbie was alive?… A large number of her music videos are pieces of anthology. It has 3,7 million subscribers.

All the “humor” videos on YouTube totaled more than 19 billion views in 2018 in France. (Source: TubularLabs)

Another YouTuber who is catching attention in the “humor” category is Swann Périssé, whose light and natural approach commands sympathy.

Staging his own existence, Swann often films himself in close-up and demonstrates a consummate art of chatting. They are not so much sketches as slices of life, an unveiling of his moods, told in a confident manner.

What are the qualities required to create a comedy channel? In an interview he gave to TV Entertainment, Norman confided this: "To put yourself forward in the profession that we practice, you have to like to stage yourself, to like to clown, so somewhere to be a little narcissistic, but not ill-advisedly.

Not to get people drunk, but to amuse them. So it's more of a quality than a flaw. "

If you look at YouTube rankings globally, music videos are by far the most viewed. Here are the leaders of this ranking, in April 2020:

  1. Slowly by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee, nearly 7 billion views. Explaining the popularity of this song is not obvious. Still, this clip uploaded in January 2017 began an ultra-fast rise and reached a record that seems difficult to exceed. The fact remains that Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee each had a long career and were already considered legends in Latin America. Making a clip together has therefore helped to create an event in this territory, and in other Hispanic-speaking countries.
  2. baby shark dance by Pinkfong Kids' Songs & Stories, 5 billion views. This song is an unexpected success, except that it is a children's song with dance movements that toddlers were eager to reproduce. It should be noted that the popularity of this song started from the Internet, and moreover the version of Pinkfong, put online in 2016, was not the original - the song was inaugurated in 2007 by a German YouTuber, Alemuel.
  3. Shape of You by Ed Sheeran, 4,7 billion views. This song is carried by one of the world's most popular artists, British singer Ed Sheeran. The clip is quite funny, because we see the performer struck down with a flick by a sumo wrestler.

Other well-established stars such as Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber or Maroon 5 have titles in the top 30 most watched videos on YouTube.

Can a newcomer find his place in the sun among such behemoths? Probably, because it is worth remembering that the record has long been held by the title G de Psy, the first title to reach one billion views in 2012, then two billion views in 2014 (it has since exceeded 3,5 billion).

In France, Norman has accumulated his highest number of views (80 million) with the parody song Luigi Clash Mario, and Cyprien himself had his record with the song Cyprien responds to Cortex.

Among the stars who have been discovered through their YouTube channel are several major celebrities:

  • Justin Bieber took off thanks to the initiative of his mother in 2007, who posted videos of her son singing on YouTube.
  • Ed Sheeran gained notoriety through clips he had self-produced and posted from 2008.
  • Susan Boyle made her mark thanks to her appearance on the show Britain's Got Talent on television in 2009 but also because the video of his performance caused a buzz on YouTube.
  • In France, the singer Irma largely owed her initial influence to her videos on YouTube, and it is thanks to this exposure that she was able to find in three days of through crowdfunding the budget for the production of his first album.

In the 1980s, actress Jane Fonda had started a second career with her fitness video cassettes. Now, it's the YouTubers who have taken up the sport at home.

Here we have an extremely popular category with many clips that have accumulated millions of views. Better yet, this category continues to grow in terms of audience.

And according to a survey conducted in 2018 by The moderator's blog, 75% of those who watch fitness videos practice the movements in parallel. Why deprive yourself of the prospect of teaching which, in the classroom, would be very expensive?

The star of the lot in France is Tibo InShape. This hyper muscular young Toulouse has 7 million subscribers, which makes him one of the most popular youtubers in France. Jovial and dynamic, he punctuates his fitness videos with expressions of his own: "okay people", "huge and dry", all punctuated by a comfortable dose of self-mockery and casualness, at the risk of annoying them more. of one.

Bodytime, for its part, is a duo (Alex and PJ) that deals with both abdominal strength training and recommended diet, with formats that are sometimes a little confusing but punctuated with fun challenges and free escapes. They have more than 1 million subscribers.

On the female side, we can see YouTubers such as Sissy MUA, with 1,4 million subscribers. Beyond sport, Sissy MUA is in favor of a healthy lifestyle. This Niçoise often films herself in her sunny surroundings, which adds to the pleasure of following her training sessions. As for the sports coach Victoire, she deals with sports as well as makeup and nutrition, while Marine Leleu spends her time challenging herself.

How to stand out in this niche? Again, being different. Thus, the thirty-something Juliana and Julian are aimed at an audience older than their competitors and deal with situations related to this age group: giving birth in water, reacting to an infidelity during her pregnancy ... Finally, the YouTuber Antoine, with its still little known channel "Small outings with friends", tries to make its public discover the maximum of sports disciplines.

In civilian life, her name is Marie Lopez but, on YouTube, she is known as EnjoyPhoenix. She has become a star in her own right, and remains the undisputed number one in the field of beauty advice among French YouTubers.

What undoubtedly seduced many Internet users, from the launch of its channel in 2011, is its simple, direct, straightforward side, which gives the impression of a discussion between girlfriends, EnjoyPhoenix not hesitating to confide the problems she may have had with her own body and how she was able to overcome them.

Since 2019, the YouTuber has taken a turn, taking an interest in deeper subjects such as well-being, and her audience has suffered somewhat. It still has 3,6 million subscribers.

Sananas or Horia attract a different type of audience and may appear more superficial. With 2,87 million subscribers, the first one reaches an audience seduced by the “glamorous” look. Sananas has established partnerships with many brands in the cosmetics field such as L'Oréal or Clarins. Horia has 2,33 million subscribers and shows a lot of energy and a consummate art of chatting. She has also concluded numerous contracts with cosmetic brands.

Other French stars in the field include ElsaMakeup and Sandrea. All of them exploit this ultra-popular niche of beauty advice by performing make-up or brushing sessions under the eyes of millions of Internet users.

Can we distinguish ourselves in this area? Probably. Thus, Jenesuispasjolie knew how to play on the second degree, while the Briton Zoella stood out for the ease of her hairstyle tutorials. There are obviously many other niches to exploit.

In France, more than half of YouTube users are female users. Yet only 22% of the top 200 French YouTube channels are hosted by women.

Clearly, YouTube seems to have been the medium that video games have been waiting for to move up a gear. In particular, the platform revealed certain formats whose success was not necessarily predictable, such as that of let's play where an Internet user films himself discovering a game.

Two of the most famous French YouTubers, Cyprien and Squeezie, even teamed up on a channel, Cyprien Gaming, later renamed Bigorneaux & Coquillages. It alone brings together more than 6 million subscribers.

Featured channels include Joueur du grenier, which specializes in testing vintage video games and thus attracts 3,43 million followers.

Whether it is providing a "walkthrough", presenting the tips of a game, taking a step back from phenomena such as Fortnite, reviewing the history of video games or just offering the discovery of a title in real time, it must be possible to find a place in the sun because there is a large public seeking information on this topic.

Who would have thought possible to gather more than a million subscribers around a series of shows on the history? Yet this is what Benjamin Brillaud achieved with his Nota Bene channel launched in 2014, which tackles this theme from various and sometimes quite unexpected angles. The success was rapid and remains constant: the least of his videos collects more than 200 views. It is true that this YouTuber has a gift for arousing interest in various historical subjects: Chinese mythology, advice on becoming a good dictator, sovereigns who died on the toilet… He produced them in documentary mode with inspired musical backgrounds. Particular sign: Nota Bene does not hesitate to present other YouTubers responsible for history channels, such as Virago, who willingly disguises himself to better tell the epic of his female characters, or Brandon's Stories, which takes us from a across France in the style of Stéphane Bern.

Here, as elsewhere, an original approach can make the difference. Thus, Confessions d'histoire uses above all the “face camera” mode, with characters in costumes who evoke a historical episode from their personal point of view, which makes the story captivating.

Cultural channels dedicated to space or science also attract a large audience. Axolot is aimed at lovers of unusual and strange information, while Lanterne Cosmique brilliantly deciphers the mysteries of the space domain. The generalist channel e-Penser could annoy some by its systematic use of a distracting humor, but is nonetheless very rich in content, and gathers more than 1,1 million subscribers.

Micmath by Mickaël Launay offers an atypical exploration of mathematics and makes this subject eminently attractive. Astonishing science managed by David Louapre is just as captivating: he proves to be a good popularizer even if some content is a bit difficult and requires some preliminary basics.

Note that it does not seem necessary to be eccentric or full of humor in order to seduce this audience. If one is targeting an audience interested in scientific or historical information, the fact of inserting excessively humoristic features can be annoying because it distracts the viewer from what he has come to seek.

YouTube is the platform of choice for a majority of Internet users wishing to train in a particular subject or technique. According to Google France, three quarters of users of the platform seek to improve their understanding of a domain. And 72% of Internet users under 35 believe that they can find a video on YouTube on everything they would like to learn to do! When it comes to tutorials, YouTube is a real gold mine. You can learn the secrets of Photoshop as well as DIY (Sikana FR, DIY with Robert…) or renovation (Like a penguin in the desert, Passion Rénovation…): there is room for everyone.

Thus, Alice Esmeralda offers dozens of vegan meal ideas, elegantly filmed in a Zen setting and sometimes punctuated by her soft voice. The quality of the production, alone, readily invites you to watch Alice's clips. Better yet, the images it presents make us want to be able to taste such preparations.

In another genre, personalities like David Laroche or Henriette NenDaKa offer tools to develop their business, but also his life project. Clearly, if there is one area where it seems possible for everyone to acquire a significant base of followers, it is the one of these tutorials and learning videos, with the advantage that they do not necessarily require ultra-sophisticated filming and editing equipment.

Documentaries are another growing category.

The very sympathetic Bruno Maltor takes us on his tours of the planet and shares with us his adventures in adventurous mode, by delivering his testimonies in real time of his discoveries. As he moves and talks to us, we discover incredible images of exotic landscapes or monuments that he comments on as we go. One of the attractions of the channel, apart from Bruno Maltor's relaxed attitude, is that a large number of videos contain a welcome element of the unexpected.

Mamytwink's gang, for their part, takes pleasure in taking us to more than improbable places, such as the most radioactive areas of Chernobyl, abandoned war forts in the open sea, the secret passages of Mont-Saint-Michel. … Another part of this channel is devoted to historical anecdotes. More than 1,4 million subscribers follow the peregrinations of these globetrotters who are not afraid of anything and regularly shower us with unusual and educational images.

Of course, this type of video often requires a lot of money. It is however possible for an individual to distinguish himself, for example, by the quality of his presence, as proved by Bruno Maltor, who started solo before being supported by a small team.

In 2017, Canal + devoted a report to the child stars of YouTube. We see Enzo and Jajoux, then aged 14 and 12 respectively, who together have more than a million subscribers. The report shows them in a shopping center where, for three hours, they engage in an autograph and selfie session. And the commentary off to rave about these YouTubers who, despite their young age, have become what we call "influencers". And to point out that they are prized by many brands who are quick to send them their toys so that they show them in their clips.

Another report, produced for the show Correspondent in May 2018, highlighted the popularity of Kalys and Athena, with their Studio Bubble Tea channel.

Admittedly, these reports did not fail to raise the question of a potential “exploitation” of children by their parents and to specify that, in each case, the latter had derived substantial income from them. It's up to everyone to see how to combine the pleasure of their offspring with their personal ethics.

In France, the channel of Swan and Néo - also present in the report ofCorrespondent - is the first in this category. These two boys are filmed by their mother Sophie. The chain's success is such that they very regularly receive toys to test, invitations to amusement parks.

Common on many channels of children and older YouTubers, the practice ofunboxing involves unpacking brand new products in front of the camera and commenting on them.

Similarly, videos of expert opinions on cameras, gadgets, connected objects, etc. are very popular. etc.

Here again, if you acquire a good reputation, the manufacturers will be happy to send you their latest news.

Here we have a theme that is still far from aligning subscribers by the millions. However, it responds to a growing concern of part of the population and seems set to experience good development.

Professor Feuillage is the subject of an impressive achievement, whether in terms of the course of each episode, the way of filming the shots, the sets as well as the editing. Although the artists involved, Mathieu Duméry and Lénie Cherino, express themselves in a crazy way, the content of their channel is all that there is more serious since it deals with ecology. The channel has managed to retain some 125 subscribers.

More sober, Nicolas Meyrieux has been running a channel called La Barbe since 2015. Its videos are clear, with an easy-to-follow presentation, interspersed with quantified information, and have a total of more than 210 subscribers.

Let us also quote channels whose audience is still reduced but which we can gain by discovering:

  • Almost nothing is lost deals with the topic of waste.
  • All Inclusive Biology is highly educational but sometimes lacks sophistication in its design.
  • Permaculture design aims to teach how to manage this form of cultivation which optimizes the interaction of plants in your garden.

There is clearly a niche here in which it is possible to distinguish yourself.

A good way to stand out may be to create a channel on a theme that few YouTubers have yet exploited. This is particularly what happened for Fabien Olicard when he launched his channel on mentalism: he explained that he had had the chance to intervene in a niche that very few people had yet explored.

One way to find a hot topic is to know what trends are popular with internet users at any given time. Consulting such lists is often a source of surprises. Here are some examples :

YouTube Trends (https://youtube.com/trends/) informs us that, for the year 2019, the following trends were observed:

  • Sustainable development has experienced a spectacular leap. As proof, the song clip Earth by Lil Dicky was the seventh most viewed music video.
  • Videos of people eating food tripled their viewership in 2019.
  • Another phenomenon that gained momentum during the same year is that of silent vlogs or videos without audio commentary, and therefore where we hear mainly ambient noise. For example, Chinese blogger Li Ziqi has gained 6 million subscribers with videos where she performs traditional food recipes or indulges in crafts, almost never expressing herself.
  • More astonishing is the rise of “music for dogs”, intended to calm our faithful companions during times of stress.
  • Another surprising tendency is that of the “Study with me” type, where we see a student revising. This category exceeded 100 million views in 2019.

Google Trends is another site that lists trends, this time more global, across the entire web. It is available in French at this address: https://trends.google.fr/trends/?geo=FR. So on the day we consulted this tool, topics like the series The paper house or actress Leighton Meester were in high demand.

We thus discover that, in the year 2019, the subjects which fascinated Internet users were Notre-Dame de Paris, the series Game of Thrones, etc.

It is also possible to refine the search by categories and find out what the specific YouTube queries were.

An efficient way to operate according to some YouTubers would be to create videos split into several parts or episodes. So those who have seen the first part should want to see the next, and watch what happens on the channel. On the other hand, those who come across one of the videos in the series might want to watch the others.

Obviously, it is not easy to win today in certain areas already well supplied in terms of videos and YouTube channels. However, you can ask yourself the following questions:

  • Would it be possible for me to approach these questions from an unusual angle?
  • Is there a demand for certain types of knowledge that I hold and which have not been covered very much or not so far?

All of this brings us to a question: what type of channel should you create? And, in fact, it is important to rephrase this question in several ways:

  • What do you like to do ?
  • What are you good at?
  • What would you like to share with others?
  • In what ways could you help others?

Do you get the mind? Each of us has a skill, a field of knowledge of its own. So with YouTube, we can benefit others. Basically it is that easy.

It is only if you choose to deal with a theme that is close to your heart that you will be able to find the necessary energy to continue, week after week, month after month, producing new content. Because producing videos is extremely time-consuming and other activities are likely to require your attention.

It is therefore better to approach YouTube with the motivation to let others discover what you are passionate about, or even to give them a good time thanks to your musical or humorous creations. Only in this way can you always find the energy to continue.

If there is one point that we can note about a large number of the Youtubers mentioned above, it is that they have been able to transform their passion into a professional activity. This is an approach that should inspire you.
