Youtubeur Guide Getting started on YouTube

Être youtubeur ideally assumes that you prepare your clips well beforehand, which is called the pre-production. How to create your first videos? What are the basic materials for efficient filming? How is the assembly going?

CCreating a YouTube channel is easy and we'll see how to do it here. A minimum of preparation is necessary, as we will also see.

The condition sine qua non to have a YouTube channel is to have a Gmail address. For the record, Gmail is the messaging service managed by Google, the owner of YouTube.

So that is your sesame. If you already have a Gmail address, you can move on to the next section without delay. Otherwise, you need to create a Gmail address, which is very easy.

Warning ! The first and last name associated with your Gmail address will by default be the name of your YouTube channel.

To take an example, the first and last name associated with my Gmail account are Daniel et Ichbiah. As a result, my YouTube channel is named Daniel Ichbiah.

I have designed other YouTube channels, for example a channel dedicated to the biography of the Telephone group. The name that appears for this channel is Phone biography. To get it, I created an email address with the first name phone and as a last name biography.

Having these rules in mind can therefore be important when creating your channel. For example, if you wanted to create a channel Chinese food recipes, you could choose, when creating the Gmail address, as first name Recipes and as a last name chinese food.

It will be possible to change the name of your channel later, but it may be good to plan this right from the start.

  1. Visit https://gmail.com.
  2. Click on Create account.
  3. Choose the option For me ou For my business according to your preference.
  4. Enter your first and last name, then the desired name for the Gmail address.
  5. Set a password and confirm it.
  6. Click on Next and complete the registration.

Public chat Gmail.com, you can verify that this email address is active and can send and receive messages.

Find a channel name

If you are running out of inspiration for your channel name, there are a number of services available on the web that can help you find ideas.

A service like Business Name Generator helps you find inspiration for a channel name.
  • On Business Name Generator (https://businessnamegenerator.com/fr), type in a theme and this service generates thousands of potential names. Generator (https://www.generateur.name) offers a similar service with sending suggestions by e-mail.
  • If you are looking for an original name, the Fantasy Name Generator service (https://www.nomsdefantasy.com) will be more appropriate. It can suggest modern French names as well as Asian names, names of legendary characters, etc.
  • Fake Name Generatorhttps://fr.fakenamegenerator.com), for its part, makes a point of generating an artificial identity: name, first name, date of birth, etc.
  1. Visit YouTube.com.
  2. Locate on the right the mention Log in.
  3. Enter the address created with Gmail, then click on Next.
  4. Type the corresponding password.

On YouTube you now see, instead of the mention Log in, an icon symbolizing your channel. If you click on it, the name of your YouTube channel is displayed.

If you go on Google.com After creating a Gmail address, you may see an icon associated with that address. If not, click Login then select your Gmail address.

  1. Click the icon displayed on Google.com then Manage your Google account.
  2. Your Google account is displayed. Click on the icon displayed in the inset.
  3. In the tab Import photos, select a photo from your computer.
  4. Adjust the chosen photograph if necessary.
  5. Click finally on Set as profile picture.

If you have a good inspiration that comes after the fact, know that it is always possible to change the name of your channel.

Two methods are possible.

The first is to change your Google name. To do this, you have to go to your Google profile, as we did before to change your profile picture.

  1. Click the icon displayed on Google.com then Manage your Google account.
  2. Your Google account is displayed. In the vertical menu, choose Personal informations.
  3. Click on the arrow to the right of the name and then on the pencil icon.
  4. Choose a new First Name / Last Name combination that will match the desired new name for the channel.

Don't make such a name change too often, as Google will aptly point out to you that people rarely change their names in everyday life.

The second method is to create a new string from your name. To do this, go to the following address: https://www.youtube.com/channel_switcher

Then click + Create a channel. Indicate the desired new name then click on Create.

You will then find yourself on YouTube in the corresponding channel. From there, you'll need to post your new videos to this channel.

Note that you can switch between the two channels (the first one you created and the new one). To do this, from the icon of the new channel on YouTube, select Change account. You will then see your two channels linked to the same Gmail address.

If there is one piece of advice we can give you without reservation, it's to go! Get started right away.

We all know someone who cares about a lot of projects, but never brings them to fruition. The reason he usually gives you is this: “I want to achieve something perfect, right from the start. "

Well no, this is not the right approach. It is better to go there. Create a first video and upload it. Test it with a few friends or relatives, people you know want to support you in your process. Take their advice into account.

Obviously, your first video will have some flaws: it's almost inevitable. It is possible that the sound or lighting is not set optimally, perhaps the decor will leave something to be desired. But that's how you learn the trade.

So, make your first video with the means at hand and upload it. The second will be a little better. The third will be even more so. Maybe the tenth will be close to perfect. Or the twentieth. In any case, there is a fertile and instructive approach here.

So yes, let's repeat: don't be afraid to post a first video. Show it to a few reliable friends and take their feedback into account. Improve the points they point out to you. It is better to do this than to wait. Many people who wanted to achieve perfection before they took the plunge never achieved anything.

If at any time you regret having posted a particular video, be aware that you can remove it or at least “unlist” it from YouTube. Nevertheless: even if you delete your first video, you will have started and it is this first step that counts.

Delete a video

Know this: if you are really disappointed with one of your videos, you can delete it at any time. It will then disappear forever from YouTube.

Here is how to delete a video:

  • In YouTube Studio, select Videos.
  • Choose the video you would like to delete.
  • In the options (three superimposed dots), choose Delete definitely.

If you are afraid that you regret having deleted this video (there is no going back), choose to go to the Details of the video, then change the Visibility of it. Then choose Not listed (it will not appear in YouTube search results) or Private.

The mode Unlisted is the one that YouTube offers by default when you upload a video. The only people who can watch this clip will be those to whom you have communicated the link to the video. They will be able to provide comments that only you will see.

The mode Private is the most restrictive: the video will only be visible to you and the users you link to. However, they will not be able to share this private link with others, nor will they be able to leave comments.

In previous article, we invited you to choose a category for your channel. Once this step is completed, you need to make a first video. Choose a topic that is close to your heart and on which you want to express yourself. It may be good at first to make videos corresponding to Internet users' requests. For this you can use various tools:

  • The suggestions offered by YouTube in its search bar. You type a word and see the questions or themes most often asked by Internet users appear.
  • Suggestions from Google or other search engines. The principle is the same. However, Google offers other useful additions: frequently asked questions on this topic and also, at the bottom of the answer pages, various queries often typed by Internet users.
  • Tools like Ubersuggest

If your category is tutorial or cultural, you can take the following point of view: Most Internet users go to YouTube or Google to get a question answered. They will therefore type something starting with interrogative pronouns such as "how", "why", "what is" ...:

  • How to build a cabin?
  • Why was a single currency created?
  • Which is the most populous country in the world?
  • etc.

So with such a title, you increase your chances that the video could be offered by YouTube in response to the title question. To find out if a question of this type is asked frequently, start typing "how", "why" or some other adverb, then the beginning of the question. Frequently asked questions will be posted by YouTube / Google.

There are many ways to shoot a clip, but the easiest by far is to use the camera of a relatively new smartphone. Their image quality is very high - we will see more about this in the next chapter.

You can repeat your text before speaking it. Once you feel ready, load up the Camera app on your smartphone. If you have a selfie stick, you can use it to keep the device away.

Select Video, then press the red circle to start recording. As long as the red square is displayed, you are recording. Click on the square to complete the recording.

Once the video is saved, you can view it in the Photos app (or Gallery on Android).

Get this video to your PC or Mac in the following way.

  1. Launch the application Image transfer.
  2. Connect your iPhone to Mac.
  3. The application may ask you to Unlock iPhone. If so, you need to check the message displayed on the iPhone and allow access (a message like “Trust this computer?” Usually appears. Sometimes you also need to type a passcode on the iPhone) .
  4. Once the access has been accepted, the images from the iPhone will appear on the screen.
  5. Select the clip you just shot. It wears the extension. MOV.
  6. Click on Import to import it to your Mac.

Rename this file so that its name reflects its contents. Otherwise, it may be difficult to easily find the “rushes” you have shot on your hard drive.

  1. Connect your smartphone to your PC.
  2. If the smartphone is an iPhone and the message Trust this computer? is displayed on the device, choose Yes. IPhone may ask you to enter the device passcode.
  3. If the smartphone is an Android, it will be necessary the first time to display the options panel by swiping your finger from the top of the home screen. Touch the menu Android system>then Tap here for more options. Then choose Files transfert.
  4. If you click on Computer from your PC, the smartphone appears in the list of Removable peripherals.
  5. Locate the folder DCIM (from the English Digital Camera Images - Images of the digital camera).
  6. Your video should be in one of the DCIM subfolders, for example Camera for an Android. An Android video is titled VIDxxx (with the date and a number). It is in the format. MP4.
  7. In the case of an iPhone, the folders have names such as 101APPLE, 102APPLE… Choose the most recent folder, and therefore the one with the larger number. Open it: the images are titled IMG_xxxx. The video you just shot will be the one with the larger number, for example IMG_5545. The video format on Apple is. MOV.
  8. Drag the video to the Windows desktop or to the folder in which you plan to place your videos.

Consider renaming your video by giving it a meaningful title. Now you will be able to upload the video from YouTube.

The tool from which you manage videos from YouTube is called YouTube Studio. It's a very complete tool and we will cover various aspects of it in several articles in our YouTuber guide.

YouTube Studio allows you to manage the uploading of a video, to add additional information (subtitles, description, etc.). It gives access to tutorials, statistics relating to your videos and other very useful tools that we will discuss as we go.

For now, we are only going to see the basics, that is, the ultra-simplified uploading of a video.

  • To access YouTube Studio, simply type youtube.com in our browser bar. If you are logged in to your Google account, you will see the corresponding icon appear on the right. Open the drop-down menu, the third option is YouTube Studio.
  • Click on the red Camera icon that houses a "+". You have three options:
    • Upload a video;
    • Go live;
    • Create a post.

Only the first option interests us for the moment: Upload a video. Select it.

  • In the next screen, select the video file that you imported to your computer.
  • A new panel is displayed. You are prompted to enter a title for your video. Make it as explicit as possible.
  • You can also indicate a Description. This point and many others will be covered later in this guide.
  • Click on Next. For the Monetizationchoose disabled for the moment. In the Elements panel video, just click on Next.
  • The fourth panel concerns the Visibility of your video. By default, the Unlisted mode is offered by YouTube. Only you and those to whom you send the link (visible under the thumbnail displayed on the right) will be able to view this video
  • Copy this link to be able to play the video on YouTube afterwards.
  • Click finally on Save to accept your choices.

And there you have it… Your first video is online and you can send the link to selected people to get their opinions. In YouTube Studio, if you click Videos in the vertical menu, you can see that your video is indeed present on YouTube.

You can play your video on YouTube by clicking on the corresponding link. Or by pulling down the menu with three superimposed dots and choosing Watch on YouTube.

It is good to watch your video in the context of YouTube to verify that it is of sufficient quality.

It only remains to share the link (the URL) with a few relatives. You can also find it by clicking on Options (the three superimposed points) and choosing Create a share link.

If, after collecting a few reviews, you think this video deserves to be widely shared, from YouTube Studio, click Not listed then choose public.

Your new video is now accessible to everyone.

It's time to shoot some more, and in the next guide we'll see how to edit, along with some useful tips for shooting.

Don't forget to share the article!
