If you are a new Switch buyer then o ff ering you the Nintendo Switch OLED is a matter of course, between the revised display and a few small adjustments in terms of design. But if you are planning to upgrade your original Switch, it's not really worth it, as the two are very similar.

In this article, we will take stock of all the necessary information about the new OLED Switch which is eagerly awaited by fans of the brand in the big N.

Is the OLED switch better than the original Switch?

Its 7-inch OLED display is pure beauty, although its resolution is still only 720p. Games like Breath of the Wild really showcase the potential of this new Oled display - it's bright, colorful, and the contrast has improved dramatically. Even on the simple home screen the letters are clear and vibrant colors seem to come out of the screen, this Oled screen is made the most of with two players using it at the same time, with improved viewing angles.

Nintendo Switch OLED vs Nintendo Switch: On the design side, the Nintendo Switch OLED looks like the original Switch and its 2019 refresh. This makes the new Switch look less dated and means there is no significant difference from size with the new model, despite the use of a larger screen.

But if you play in nomadic mode, the Oled also shows its strengths in terms of brightness and contrast. Especially since the sensors of the console automatically adapt the brightness. Convenient for those who are so immersed in their game that they haven't seen night fall. Overall this console is as sleek and modern as ever, with its very thin bezels, solid and premium fi nish. On the back, the kickstand now extends the full length of the screen, making it much more stable to use propped up on a table, with or without controllers attached.

The Switch OLED model measures 102x242x13,9mm with the Joy-Cons attached, which is just a bit larger than the original. She weighs just over 20g more now, or 420g in total. Despite a slight increase in size, it is still as comfortable to use in portable mode, although it is now less easy to slip into a pocket. There's also a LAN port on the docking station to connect it directly to your Wi-Fi router via an Ethernet cable - this means you'll be able to access the fastest internet speeds your home network allows.

Add to that two additional USB ports, which can be used for a number of things like charging your Nintendo Switch Pro controller or even the Joy-Cons when attached to the grip.

Refresh your memory

Since what's under the hood is the same in the old and new Nintendo Switch versions, there isn't much to say about it. Powered by Nvidia's custom Tegra processor, the Nintendo Switch OLED is fast, responsive, and fun to play. It offers 64 GB of internal memory. But if you run out of it, you can increase it using a MicroSD card, slipped on the back, under the kickstand. In portable and tabletop mode, you will be able to use its new and improved stereo speakers, which are loud and clear given the size of the console, although the sound is a bit low when the volume is at maximum.

This Nintendo Switch OLED offers an autonomy of 4:30 to 9 h, the same as the original. And that's enough for most people. It would have been nice if Nintendo had improved battery life anyway. But it will be for the next time. The Nintendo Switch OLED has taken giant strides when it comes to on-the-go gaming sensations, as opposed to when it's hooked up to your TV (just as nice as it always has been).

We were blown away by the liveliness of the graphics. Basically, the only reason we'll tell you not to buy this console is if you already own the Nintendo Switch. Under the hood, they are almost the same. But if this is your first Nintendo Switch, this model is the one you should get your hands on. It's arguably Nintendo's best game console to date.

Nintendo Switch OLED games

While Nintendo has doubled the basic storage space of the Nintendo Switch OLED from 32GB to 64GB, that's still not enough for gamers who want a handful of downloaded games. If you only use the Switch's native storage size, you might soon find yourself deleting games to download others as you start to run out of space.

If you already have a Nintendo Switch, it is likely that you have a large game library. While most consoles do generational updates these days, which makes game compatibility an issue, Nintendo Switch's OLED refresh doesn't. All the games you bought on your regular Nintendo Switch work perfectly on your OLED Switch. The only difference is in terms of colors and overall visual quality, since OLED screens offer better color vividness.

Despite the increase in base storage size, a micro SD card is still recommended for gamers who wish to have more than a handful of games at their disposal. Considering the size of modern games, basic storage can fill up pretty quickly, and a micro SD card for your Switch should give you the freedom to download any games you want.

Thanks to the new LAN cable feature on the dock, you'll also be able to download games relatively faster since wired connections tend to be more stable than Wi-Fi.

What price for the OLED Switch?

All gamers have shredded and teenagers too, even parents, the Nintendo Switch OLED that arrived last October at a really low price on Amazon. In France, the price of the new OLED Switch varies between € 319 and € 350 on sale at Amazon, Leclerc, Micromania and Fnac. That said, we've seen third-party retailers charge much more for Nintendo Switch OLED restocks than they should (much like PS5 or Xbox Series X stock), so be careful. The console costs $ 349 in the US and £ 309 in the UK, so anyone who makes you buy the Nintendo Switch OLED at a higher price is rolling you in the flour.

If you want to take advantage of it, and not waste a single minute, it only costs € 319,99 instead of € 364,99 on Amazon right now. You can now save € 45 on your purchase, so take advantage of that by heading to Amazon now.

VERDICT

Generally, Nintendo Switch OLED is a great console. That's mainly because the base Nintendo Switch is still a great console, and the OLED Switch brings a handful of clever additions. The OLED display is as impressive as we had hoped it would be. Minor improvements to the kickstand, speakers, dock, and storage also correct shortcomings in the base model.

Still, there is something decidedly unsatisfying about the OLED Switch. After four years, it still has the same components, the same resolution and the same controllers, none of which were perfect to begin with. With a whole new generation of consoles on the market, even an OLED display can't make the Switch feel particularly smooth or powerful.

If you take it for what it is, the Switch OLED is a solid system, and an easy bet for gamers who haven't yet taken the plunge to a Switch. But if you consider what it might have been, the Switch OLED might just be a stopgap before Nintendo takes another big risk on another inventive idea.

WE LIKE

  • Superb OLED display
  • Long battery life
  • 64 GB of storage.

WE WOULD CHANGE

  • Not as powerful as the PS4 or Xbox One
  • Portable console, but quite large.

THE LAST WORD : Playback on your TV has not changed. Whether you use it alone or with friends, its bigger and brighter screen makes everything more enjoyable.

The alternatives

STEAM DECK

Few of the nomadic consoles can overshadow the Switch. Between a custom Zen 2 + RDNA 2 APU, 16GB of RAM, and up to 512GB of storage, the Steam Deck lets you play AAA PC games anywhere.
