We employ here the verb "can" conjugated in the first person singular present indicative. The difference between the two relates to the form of the query. Indeed, there is three types of interrogations.
The first is the question with "Is" :
- Can I find a taxi at this time?
Or an interrogation with intonation, namely:
- Can I borrow your book please?
Or the questioning with inversion of the subject:
- Can I come see you this weekend?
But the question which arises why for example to use the inversion of the subject rather than the intonation, it is very simple!

The difference remains in relation to the type of language. Indeed, the interrogative form "I can" is part of everyday language while "can I" is part of the supported language.
So it depends on the communication situation, if the situation is formal use the subject inversion if it is not use intonation or "is what".
