☑️ The 4 Best Home Air Quality Monitors
– Reviews News
Indoor air can be surprisingly dirty, especially if you live next to an industrial area or major highways. From floating particles to gases, the air around you is full of pollutants. And if left unchecked, they can lead to serious health risks. Air quality monitors are the perfect answer at times like these. As the name suggests, these devices monitor the air around you and notify you of harmful pollutants.
However, buying an air quality monitor is only half the bridge. It does not purify the air and you will need to purchase an air purifier to close the loop. That said, if you're hesitant to invest in a high-end air purifier and want to know your air quality ahead of time, here are some great air quality monitors you can buy.
These don't burn a hole in your pocket and help you learn more about the air around you.
So without further ado, let's get started. To have to? But before that,
1. Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor
If your smart home has Amazon Alexa-connected devices, Amazon's Smart Air Quality Monitor will fit right into the mix. It's affordable and its small form factor means you can put it anywhere. The good news is that even if you don't have an Alexa device, you'll still get a poor air quality alert on your phone. For now, this little air quality monitor from Amazon can monitor VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and PM2,5 particles. And the indicator on the front shows the air quality.
Since this Amazon product integrates with Alexa, you can control it and get details using voice commands. If the air quality index drops in your home, a connected smart speaker will report it. Plus, you can see all the details in a neat graph in your Alexa app. Although the graph is quite comprehensive, the device does not measure radon or carbon monoxide in the air. You also won't see PM10 particle concentration details.
It is a small device with an air outlet in the front to detect the quality. According to the folks at PC Mag, it does a good job of measuring air quality, especially for its price. They tested it with a Dyson TP07 and the devices gave similar readings when the air quality changed. But of course, the Amazon device takes some time to save the changes.
For the price, it does a decent job of letting you monitor your air quality, especially if you have an Alexa-connected home.
2. Eve Room Air Quality Monitor
The Eve Room indoor air quality monitor is almost in the same price range, and yet it brings a valuable feature to the table: an e-ink display. The screen allows you to read the air quality index, temperature and humidity levels directly from the screen. It is a simple air quality monitor and can only monitor VOCs in the air. Interestingly, it supports Apple HomeKit integration and can ask Siri for air quality.
That said, it has a limited number of sensors and can only measure VOCs in the air. Air quality is described in the form of stars. So if you see less white stars on your monitor, it translates to poor air quality. At the same time, the companion app gives you a complete picture of indoor air quality. The downside is that you cannot measure PM2,5, PM10, Radon, and CO2 levels inside your home. In short, this is a basic air quality monitor.
Interestingly, this is a wireless device and is battery operated. Once charged, this device can work for up to 6 weeks, giving you the freedom to place it wherever you want. At the same time, the companion app lets you create smart rules. For example, you can configure it to run a scene when the air quality drops.
It works as expected and shows degradation in air quality, especially if your home has high levels of VOCs. For those who don't know, paints, old furniture, air fresheners, and even appliances like printers and photocopiers can emit VOCs. It's quick to detect the change in air quality, and the stars on the screen will let you know.
Although the setup process is straightforward, some settings and features are split between the HomeKit app and the Eve Home app, robbing you of a smooth experience.
3. Tempop M10 Air Quality Monitor
The Temtop M10 is a step up from the previous one and can monitor the air for formaldehyde, as well as VOCs and fine particles. Like the one above, it includes a neat display on the front and displays the Air Quality Index (AQI) inside your home. Interestingly, it uses a laser sensor to scan the air for formaldehyde.
If you must know, formaldehyde levels in indoor air increase if you burn fuel in places with poor air circulation. Other sources of formaldehyde include wood products and building materials. And prolonged exposure can cause shortness of breath.
The good thing about this air quality monitor is that it sounds an alarm when it detects any contaminant. So yes, you don't need to scan the numbers into your phone, and that's a plus. At the same time, the elegant LED indicator on the front will allow you to modify the air quality.
Although the M10 does support an app, setting it up is a bit of a pain and several users have pointed this out in their reviews. That said, it allows you to query historical data. Moreover, you can even download data for future research.
It includes a rechargeable battery and the 2200mAh battery provides enough power to work for 6 hours. However, if you want it to stay on all the time, you'll need to plug it into a power source.
The Temtop M10 is a good buy if you want to monitor the air for VOCs and hazardous gases. However, this compact air quality monitor lacks a humidity and temperature indicator.
4. Airthings 2930 Wave Plus
The Airthings 2930 Wave Plus brings several essential features to the table that other air quality monitors otherwise lack. On the one hand, it includes 6 sensors and can measure radon, VOCs and carbon dioxide in the air. This is in addition to the standard temperature and humidity sensors. And guess what? It is also compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant and IFTTT. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with Apple Homekit.
It is a small disc-shaped device and can be mounted on the wall. Like the previous ones, it is a wireless device and works with AA batteries. There is a stylish LED indicator on the front of the unit and a green light indicates clean, impurity-free air.
The companion app gives you a detailed air quality analysis. You can also check the history. And for now, you can go back a year to check the air quality index. Like its previous counterparts, it is a simple Bluetooth device. Fortunately, the connection is quite stable and you will be able to see the new data on your phone or connected device.
Interestingly, this device needs a week to ten days to calibrate before giving you an accurate picture. It works as expected and displays an AQI similar to other portable air quality monitors.
It is more expensive than those above. But it's your best bet if you want a full picture of the air inside your home.
breathe clean air
Harmful gases in the air can cause a number of health risks. For example, formaldehyde causes shortness of breath, while long-term exposure to radon causes lung complications. And an air quality monitor helps you mitigate those risks.
So, if your monitor often shows disturbing readings, the best thing to do is to invest in an air purifier.
