spoilers for "Better Call Saul" below.
Few expected a "Breaking Bad" prequel to live up to the original. So imagine our surprise when “Better Call Saul” delivers this series with something even more special, leading many fans to wonder: is “Better Call Saul” better than “Breaking Bad”? In any case, both are two of the best series in history in our particular ranking.
Would a return to the Saul story, or even another spin-off, dilute the impact of these two essentially perfect series?
We take a look at why "Better Call Saul" came to an end and how the franchise could evolve now into the future.
Why 'Better Call Saul' Was Canceled

Although we continue to wait for Netflix to air the sixth and final season in Spain, 'Better Call Saul' is one of those series that meets the double requirement of being part of the canceled series and the last seasons of 2022. Two years earlier, in 2020, Better Call Saul showrunner Peter Gould revealed on Express that the series would end with its sixth and final season.
"From day one of 'Better Call Saul,' my dream was to tell the full story of our complicated and committed hero, Jimmy McGill — now AMC and Sony are making that dream a reality," he said.
“We couldn't be more grateful to the fans and critics who make this journey possible. Next month we will start working on the sixth and final season. »
AMC Studios President Sarah Barnett added: "The green light for a prequel to one of the most iconic series in television history is one of the boldest moves AMC has ever made. taken. But thanks to the creative genius of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, was also one of the most rewarding. »
Since then, the creator Vince Gilligan explained to The Hollywood Reporter why season six ended up being the last episode: " You gotta know when to leave the party. I know I was asked the same thing at the end of "Breaking Bad" and I gave the same answer, but I have to prove to myself that I'm not someone with a trick. »

'Better Call Saul' was able to end on its own terms instead of expecting an abrupt cancellation. This allowed the writers to take their time and eventually reach the "Breaking Bad" storyline by the end of its final episode.
With no more story to tell, plus future scenes of Saul looking even further afield in 'Breaking Bad', it seems like The story of Saul came to a natural conclusion. However, a few months ago there came a time when it didn't seem feasible anymore.
In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Peter Gould opened up about the production incident that saw Bob Odenkirk suffer a heart attack on set.
“There is no backup plan for the manager having a heart attack. It's impossible. It reminds you that, as disturbing and important as the entertainment seems – and we all feel like it's life and death when working on this series; I always feel like I'm about to be crushed by a rock – I'm not,” he recalls. “It's entertainment. »

Five weeks later, Odenkirk returned to the set to finish filming the final episodes of "Better Call Saul." And, according to Gould's account, Bob was eager to move on:
"When I was still in the hospital, [Bob] He would call me and say, 'Maybe you should send me some scripts. Naomi, his wife, was in the background saying, "Don't send scripts." I don't know if I answered the question about backup plans, but there can be. We wouldn't have had a program. We would have given up everything. »
Fortunately, everything went well, and the story was shot to the end.
Will there be a 'Better Call Saul' spin-off or movie?

Aunque Saul's story is complete, and most of the final flashback to 'Better Call Saul', the series begins as a spin-off, where we suggest that we could, in theory, continue the franquicia of 'Breaking Bad' in alguna new address.
When asked about this possibility, the "Breaking Bad" creator didn't rule out other spinoffs. In this way, gilligan admitted to Rolling Stone: " I could do more with this universe. And maybe one day I will. Especially if I fail in everything that comes after. Then I'll crawl back. »
However, that doesn't necessarily mean Gilligan ever will.
“Right now, whether or not there is more room to grow – and there probably is – I feel it's time to do something new“, he explained.

Diving back might repeat an all-too-common mistake in today's TV and movies.
“Without naming names, I watch some of the worlds, universes, stories that I love, whether on TV or in movies. And I think there's a certain point, and it's hard to define, where you've done too much in the same universe,” he said.
“And some universes are much bigger and more elastic. Ours is very small, Albuquerque, New Mexico, compared to some of those movie and TV worlds and series. »
However, in June 2022, AMC President Dan McDermott gave fans hope during a chat with Variety, saying, "I can tell you that if I could do anything to cheer on Vince and Peter to continue in this universe, I would.
"I think you should ask them, but the door is always open and I'm looking forward to the day when my phone rings and Vince or Peter or our friends at Sony call and say, 'Hey, I think we have another show in this universe.' “.

If a spin-off occurs, don't expect aaron paul to play jesse again after the end of 'Better Call Saul'.
“We all know our characters very well after playing them for years, so that feels good,” Paul recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “[Jesse] will always have a special place in me, but I can say with confidence that ['Better Call Saul'] was the last time we would see Pinkman. So it was a nice goodbye. »
Bob Odenkirk probably wouldn't reprise his role either. after the emotional goodbyes from fans and the crew of 'Better Call Saul', saying: "We may have come from many people's favorite series of all time and we could have been hated for simply trying to make a series. But we did no, they gave us an opportunity and I hope we took advantage of it. »
Goodbye to Saul Goodman. And Jimmy McGill. And Gene Takovic. Now is the time for another character to take the reins of 'Breaking Bad', assuming Gilligan decides to revisit this beloved world he created for which, no doubt, he would also deserve to star alongside the statues of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman of Albuquerque.
