'Uncut Gems' is leaving Netflix in May 2022
– Reviews News
uncut gemstones (Is Jahms uncut as it was called recently) will soon be leaving Netflix in the United States. We don't usually report individual move starts (we were writing all day), but given the importance of uncut gemstones at Netflix, we thought we were making an exception.
Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie direct this intense thriller about a struggling New York jeweler. Adam Sandler plays the title role and is widely regarded as one of the best roles of his career.
The film is significant for Netflix given that Netflix owns the exclusive international rights to the film, while it had a limited theatrical release in the United States in late 2019.
Netflix International (all regions except the US) received the movie on January 31, 2020 and it was one of the best movies to be released exclusively on Netflix throughout 2020.
It was then added to Netflix in the US a few months later on May 25, 2020. We now know that Netflix US was licensed for two years.
This is why a takedown notice is now shown in film for May 25, 2022 although on the page itself, Netflix displays a "Last day to watch" notice for May 24.
It's worth noting that Netflix didn't include Uncut Gems on its official deletions list for May 2022, but that's not unusual given that those lists often miss more than 50% of actual deletions.
Will Uncut Gems leave Netflix internationally?
Outside the United States, the film will remain, at least in the short or medium term. In the long run, we suspect A24 will eventually pick up the film rights, but for now, they're with Netflix. Like anyone who's been following our site for a while, just because something has the Netflix Original branding doesn't mean it's on Netflix forever.
A24's films have slowly left Netflix US in recent months as contracts for its library of films on the service disappear. If we go back just a few years ago, there were over 50 A24 movies on Netflix. This is because Netflix no longer has the first window deal with A24, that deal is with Showtime.
However, A24 is working on a large number of Netflix projects. Noah Baumbach's White Noise movie is on its way to Netflix in 2022. There are also three series on the way in the form of cow meat, survival of the thickestand a comedy series Mohammed Amer.
