– Reviews News
With live-action One Piece set to sail in 2023, we want to answer one of the biggest questions surrounding the show. How many seasons of the One Piece live-action series can we expect to see on Netflix? Let's talk about that.
At the time of writing, there are currently 1073 published chapters of A piece and 1049 episodes of the anime adaptation.
The anime alone is approximately 25 minutes or 152 hours of runtime. This means that, without stopping, it would take a minimum of 419,2 days to see everything. A piece. The astronomical amount of time it takes to watch One Piece anime will only grow in the coming years thanks to the ongoing manga and its anime adaptation, which will see the production of hundreds more episodes.
One of the biggest critics of the A piece Anime often finds its rhythm, sometimes taking an entire 24-minute episode just to fit one chapter when it's possible to cover 3 or 4 chapters at a time. However, the pacing issues that the anime faces are also due to the fact that it cannot go beyond the story beyond the manga, forcing Toei Animation to write filler or mess up the pacing.
This gives the live-action series a chance to give the story the pacing it deserves.
rhythm of season 1
Although the live-action series has the enormous challenge of adapting the mammoth-sized story, it also has the advantage of having plenty of free time and not having to worry about exceed the source material.
Runtimes are yet to be confirmed, but we can assume that each episode will be around 45-60 minutes long.
We are sure that the first season of the live-action adaptation will cover the story till the end of Arlong Park. This means that per live action episode, around 4,4 anime episodes are covered.
We assume that each episode will cover the following arcs:
episodes | story arc | anime episodes | manga chapters |
---|---|---|---|
un | romantic sunrise | 1-3 | 1-7 |
23 | Arch of the city of Orange | 4-8 | 8-21 |
4-5 | Syrup Village Arch | 9-18 | 22-41 |
6-7 | barate bow | 19-30 | 42-68 |
8-10 | Arlong Park Arch | 31-44 | 69-95 |
And the next seasons?
With as much padding reduced as possible, good pacing, and at least ten episodes per season, we assume that each season can cover the following sagas/arcs;
Seasons | Saga/Arc |
---|---|
un | Romantic sunrise – Arlong Park |
2 | City of Logue–Alabasta |
3 | Jaya Skypiea |
4 | Water 7 – Hall Post Enies |
5 | Thriller Bark – Amazon Lily |
6 | Impel Down to Post-War Arc |
7 | Back to Sabaody – Dressrosa |
8 | Zou – Whole Cake Island |
9 | Levely – Land of the Wa |
10+ | final saga |
Is it possible to cover story arcs like Dressrosa and Wano Country in one season?
It must be.
The scale of One Piece's story is huge, and adapting the story for a live-action series is a huge task. Thanks to the sheer number of story arcs, it's hard to see how the show won't have a minimum of ten seasons. It's a big commitment from the cast, crew, and Netflix if the story is to be adapted from start to finish.
