Could 'The Queen's Gambit' Chess Head to Netflix Games?
– Reviews News
Soon we will reach two years from The Queen's Bet landed on Netflix, which won numerous accolades for Netflix to become one of their most-watched limited series of all time and turn a vast audience into chess lovers. A season 2 isn't on the way, but could a game be? A new trademark filing suggests so.
Filed on March 2, 2022, the new trademark in question is simply for "The Queen's Gambit", but what we find interesting is the fact that "Downloadable Gaming Software” is listed under goods and services.
If that's not enough, the ancillary goods and services listed are for the following:
“Entertainment services, namely providing video games computer, electronic and online; providing temporary use of non-downloadable interactive games”
This all but confirms that a game surrounding Netflix's The Queen's Gambit is on its way to Netflix Games. But what could be the game?
Smart money, of course, would be a heavily branded chess clone, complete with visualizations and possibly even voice lines from the Netflix show.
The game won't have nearly the same rumble as when it first released in the series. In November 2020, it was reported that sales of chess boards were increasing and traffic to the Chess.com website was skyrocketing.
This increase in traffic has led Chess.com to capitalize on the newfound popularity of chess by offering new opponents in the form of Beth Harmon at certain points in her life that you can play against.
However, these bots were eventually deactivated in January 2021.
Of course, beyond a trademark filing, there's still no official confirmation that anything is on the way from Netflix. With gaming being an increasingly important part of Netflix's future (they bought three studios in less than 6 months), we expect to see a lot of related games in the future.
You might be wondering if Netflix can even produce a game of chess. Chess is widely considered to be in the public domain, although there is still much debate over other aspects of copyright and gaming.
With the exception of two Strange things entries, Netflix's gaming efforts so far have been mostly based on getting new IPs and games from other game studios. Whether it's Krispee Street from FrostyPop Games, Shatter Remastered from PikPok or Asphalt Xtreme from Gameloft.
Would you like to return to the world of chess on Netflix if they release a new game? Let us know in the comments.
