Top Gun: Producer and Maverick star Tom Cruise wasn't going to let the first film go live.
During an extensive Q&A at Cannes attended by IGN, the 59-year-old action star revealed he had put his foot down when it came to making his Top Gun: Maverick debut in cinemas.
"They wouldn't dare," he said, definitely. " That will never happen. It would never happen. Never. It will not arrive. »
Why was Cruise so opposed to an online release? It's all about the cinematic experience.
"Look at us all together," he said, pointing to the theater. “We are all united. We all speak different languages, different cultures, different ideas about art, film or storytelling, but we come together so that we can come together as a community and share a common experience.
It's no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic has put the brakes on Cruise's other upcoming film, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. Other studios have tried their luck releasing their movies online, with Marvel's Black Widow making waves as one of the first. But Cruise was adamant that would never happen with Top Gun's sequel, Maverick.
“I've always loved the public,” he explained. “I make my films for the public, because I am an audience first and foremost. »
He also hinted that making films for the big screen is a very different process from making films for television services. Streaming.
"There's a very specific way to make a film for the cinema and I make films for the big screen," he said. “I know where to go after this. And it's good. But I always thought about a movie not just for the opening weekend but for the distance.
“You're hoping to make a film that's going to entertain and engage an audience not just on opening weekend, but down the line, and I love that experience. I want this experience not only for myself, but I know there are so many people who want this experience. I want other filmmakers to have that experience and have it as an outlet.
Cruise then opened up about how much he loves movies. For him, it's all about the buzz of watching the latest releases among fans.
“Cinema is my love. This is my passion. I always go to the movies when they come out – I put my cap on and sit in the audience with everyone. I go in, I want to see the trailers.
Director Joseph Kosinsk previously revealed that he shot over 800 hours of footage for Top Gun: Maverick. However, Tom Cruise was restricted from piloting a real jet during the film's production.
