Research from cyber-resilience specialist Opentext Security Solutions has revealed how vulnerable consumers are to fraud, dangerous scams and explicit content on online shopping sites. Streaming illegal athletes.
Analysis of 50 popular sites revealed that each contained malicious content, while more than 40% of them lacked the necessary security certificate. In addition to users being exposed to dangerous fraud and scams, research revealed that explicit and extreme pop-ups bombard site visitors.
As we approach a huge weekend of television, including Anthony Joshua's last fight, the launch of Dragon House, and Man Utd vs Liverpool in the Premier League, viewers may be tempted to stream illegally. However, they could also be exposing themselves to a range of hazardous materials, designed to separate them from their personal information and, ultimately, their money. Some users may pay to access illegal streams, thereby passing their personal information and money to criminals.
One of the most dangerous threats widely encountered on the sites of Streaming illegal were banking Trojans. By simply clicking an “unmute” button on a site, users unwittingly download software that hackers use to access bank details and personal information. Users didn't even need to enter any information – one click was all it took to do the wrong.
Since the 2021 study, the types of pop-ups and scams targeting users have also changed. Previously, bitcoin scams were used to target users, but this year there has been a noticeable absence of them, with other cryptocurrencies and investment platforms being used to lure unsuspecting consumers.
The latest searches also found numerous examples of explicit content hosted on or linked to Streaming illegal. This explicit content was extreme and posed a real risk to families who might share devices with children in their household.
It was also evident that it is increasingly difficult to find watchable content, as users are sent to many dubious sites, without everyone actually finding what they are looking for.
“These sites of Streaming Illegal threats are often run by criminal enterprises to obtain users' personal data and resell it,” warns Kelvin Murray, Senior Threat Researcher at Opentext Security Solutions. “There is no safe way to use them without putting yourself in danger. As the people running these sites become more savvy, the scams they employ to trick users into giving up their data will be harder to spot. Therefore, we recommend that you avoid these types of websites and not put yourself at risk.
“It is clear from this report that service users Streaming illegal activities put themselves and their families at risk of serious harm,” said Kieron Sharp, CEO of intellectual property protection organization FACT. “Illegal viewing of content puts user data at significant risk from hackers and organized criminals and, worryingly, exposes children to explicit content. To protect our children as well as our data, the public should watch content only through legal providers.
