Password sharing has long been a thorn in Netflix's side. The supplier of Streaming is currently testing additional charges for people who share accounts with others.
Many Netflix* subscribers share their account with family, friends and partners, even if they don't live under the same roof. It's actually forbidden, but so far the provider of Streaming had no way of identifying the "culprits". Instead, Netflix has now come up with a strategy on how to make money from account sharing. Customers should get away with it even cheaper than before.
Account sharing for a fee – Netflix with a new test
"We've always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans," Netflix manager Chengyi Long wrote in an article by blog. In her formulation, she tries to avoid blaming Netflix customers for sharing passwords with people outside the household: "While these features are extremely popular, they also has led to some confusion as to when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts would be split between households, but this impacts "our ability to invest in new TV shows and movies for our members."
According to Chengyi Long, a lot of thought has been given over the past year to how users who previously used Netflix outside the home could continue to do so "in a simple and secure way". The result is now a testthe in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru should be started. Now Netflix subscribers with standard and premium account can add a maximum of two additional members to their account – against one $2,99 additional fee (equivalent to around 2,70 euros). The "sub-accounts" have their own profile, personalized recommendations, a username and a password.
Another new feature will allow members with Basic, Standard and Premium accounts to transfer the profile information of other users with whom they share an account to a separate account or to a "sub-account". This means affected users don't have to start from scratch when it comes to their watchlist and recommendations – and Netflix generates new subscribers with little effort.
Netflix Password Sharing
Netflix's new test isn't the first attempt against password sharing proceed. Last year, the supplier of Streaming tried an extra layer of security designed to lock out non-Netflix account holders. Today, stagnant new signup growth and fiercely triumphant competition have the company pursuing other avenues — ones that may alienate fewer users. (fk) *tz.de is an offer of IPPEN.MEDIA.
