Modern superhero movies probably wouldn't generate so much rejection if they didn't lean so blatantly towards standards without imagination and so rigid. There's nothing particularly against amusement parks, as Scorsese would call them, but roller coasters should pack a punch to be fun.
But the truth is, it's hard to have great things if the audience doesn't support them. One of the most imaginative films in superhero cinema came out 14 years ago, but it stuck overshadowed by two other major projects that changed the course of the genre. The ultra-serious magnificence of 'The Dark Knight' and the shared universe's cue in 'Iron Man' trumped 'Hellboy 2: The Golden Army' at the time.
dual effort
Guillermo del Toro once again did another earth-shattering exercise in the genre with the character he introduced four years earlier in the decent (and aged) first movie. In addition to the surprising success of 'Pan's Labyrinth', he got fabulous freedom to do with the sequel. a more personal film that exudes fantasy without losing the bad drool which comes from the fear of the character.
Although it can also be seen on platforms such as Lionsgate+ or Movistar+, 'Hellboy 2: The Golden Army' can also be seen on Netflix, although only until November 15. That's not a bad excuse to reclaim one of the superhero movies that deserved better luck than the one they got when it premiered. Or one of Del Toro's most underrated.
We see the Mexican mostly associated with beautiful fantasy, but where I really see him most pleasurable and generally is when he gets down to the pulp, and isn't afraid to get dirty and ruffled with channelism. At the end of the day, he knows how to find the register so as not to be boring and to have fun, as shown a sequel significantly superior to its predecessor.
'Hellboy 2: The Golden Army': Fantastic, badass fun
Its creation of creature worlds is dazzling, with its combination of exquisite drawing and good use of special effects (digital can be very convincing if there's some craftsmanship). The tone of the character is better balanced to enter a more complex moral domain and Del Toro does not hesitate to enter into crazy and very comical elementslike a smoking character with a German accent dressed as a dishwasher or the sinister tooth fairies.
There's a sense of wonder, there's lighthearted fun, there's a bit of badass, and there's some really vivid imagery. Del Toro is one of the most defining figures of this genre, because he was able to bring out its most festive and also the most macabre aspects in a truly coherent tone, and make impactful motion pictures. 'Blade II' and this one are refreshing works that present the embarrassments of most current productions.
