Before I start, let me clarify the title. No, rock music is not dead insofar as it no longer exists. There are still tons of rock bands making a lot of money every year. Rock is 100% alive, but it sure isn't going well. When I was growing up in the 90s, two phrases – which have since become archaic – distilled the essence of cool in my mind. "Sex, drugs and rock and roll" and "party like a rock star" were two common phrases that helped define what "cool" was supposed to be.
Rock was the anthem of rebellious youth; it was a genre designed to send the establishment into foaming fits of rage at the first stroke of the guitar. However, after the advent of gangsta rap, bands like Motley Crue, Poison, and virtually all subsequent rock bands seemed toothless in comparison. How could the mischievous and hellish hooligans of rock and roll be complemented by real murderers and gangsters in the battle for the counterculture crown?
In the video linked above, the YouTuber known as The Punk Rock MBA explains the exact moment rock music died and why the genre's rot continues to persist today.
