The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida seizure approximately $34 million in crypto-monnaies to a resident of the Town of Parkland who pirate online accounts from popular platforms such as HBO, Netflix and Uber sell the information later, the US Department of Justice reported Monday.
This is one of the seizures of crypto-monnaies largest in the United States in a case related to illegal activity on the so-called dark web, the agency said in a statement.
According to the complaint, law enforcement officials identified a southern resident Florida that he "earned millions using an online alias" with which he made more than 100 sales of illicit items and "hacked into online account information on many of the world's largest dark web marketplaces" .
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, sold the hacked account information online to services such as HBO, Netflix and Uber, among others, and accessed the dark web using TOR, a network of private and anonymous communication that never reveals the data of the users who use it.
This person used illegal dark web money transfer services to launder a cryptocurrency on the other, a technique called “chain jumping,” in violation of federal money laundering laws.
The objective of this type of operation or transaction of crypto-monnaies is to "hide the original source of the funds," the prosecutor's office said.
This seizure is the result of “Operation TORnado,” a joint investigation stemming from the ongoing efforts of the OECD, a partnership between federal, state and local law enforcement.
The main mission of the Ocdetf program is "to identify, disrupt and dismantle drug traffickers, money launderers and other transnational criminal organizations".
