PlayStation Studios buys FromSoftware? How much do you really care?
– Reviews News
In this last period, rumors returned that Sony would be ready to acquire a new team of developers, to add to the stable of PlayStation Studios. Today, however, Dr. Serkan Toto – insider but mostly CEO of a consulting company – suggested that one of the possible acquisitions is From software.
Will it be like this? For now, we don't know and Toto himself says that it's all at the very beginning of the discussion. There is time and space for nothing to happen. Suppose, however, that the two parties reach an agreement. The question is: how much do we care?
Obviously let's leave the console wars aside and let's not start discussing the obvious advantages for Sony PlayStation. Let's talk about what players' hopes should be after such an acquisition. To be more specific, PlayStation and possibly PC gamers, as Sony is slowly bringing its exclusives to this platform as well.
A panorama of Elden Ring
It's not an easy task, because with each acquisition one of the curves of the video game scene exults, but for what reason? Why can't other "rival" console players play this video game? Should we rejoice in the loss of others?
An acquisition is only useful to the user if it gives the development team access to resources (money, technological tools, support team, etc.) that they would not otherwise have if they were independent and , therefore, if it allows this team to create a game that it could not have produced otherwise.
A simple example is house mark, which created Returnal only because a major publisher (Sony PlayStation) decided to invest in the project early on. The acquisition ensures that the team can continue to work on bigger and riskier projects than in the past.
The same would happen with From software? The Japanese team has already amply demonstrated that it can evolve in terms of technology and production from game to game. In just thirteen years, FromSoftware has worked on several IPs, many of which are completely new (all Miyazaki games, to begin with). Game after game, the team honed their skills and expanded their catchment area, in a journey that culminated in resounding success like that of Elden Ring. What more could it do if it was part of PlayStation Studios?
FromSoftware does not need PlayStation and players don't need FromSoftware to become an exclusive team. In this situation, all the advantages go to Sony, which would have access to new weighty exclusives and would get a lot of positive publicity, since FromSoftware is objectively a team appreciated by PlayStation gamers, who have been "bragging" about the exclusives produced by Miyazaki since years. .
So tell us, do you agree or do you think the player would benefit greatly from this acquisition? And if so, which ones? No, Bloodborne 2 is not a valid answer.
