The weekend has (finally) arrived, and besides, with these days when we're too lazy to leave the house, it's the perfect time to settle into the sofa and plug in a series at once to run a good marathon. Thanks to the platforms of Streaming we have a lot short series which can be seen practically in a single sitting, and one of those who engages from the beginning and raises the level with each chapter is 'Close enough'the new animated series from the creator of “Ordinary Stories”.
Stupid Pathetic Millennial Humor
'Close enough' is one of the best series I've seen in terms of capturing this pathetic and sad essence of being a millennialincluding sharing an apartment with multiple people because you don't have enough rent, enduring a succession of low-paying jobs, and being at the point of being too old and too young at the same time.
It's a bit of reality Josh and Emily, a couple in their thirties with a 5-year-old daughter who share an apartment with recently divorced friends to keep themselves afloat. They are not young people who are successful and often live under exploitation and surrounded by stress, and yet nothing about 'Close Enough' is drama, but it's a hilarious series full of surreal and absurd moments.
If you're already familiar with 'Current Stories', you'll know a bit about where the plans go with the tone of the series, although this time J. G. Quintel opt for a more realistic setting.
A family sitcom that breaks the format from the inside
Despite being in today's Los Angeles and leaving situations like parent reunions or a short jaunt to the hip nightclub to feel like you're in your twenties again, each of the chapters ends up delirious in total madness and out of control which ends up erupting from within what would be a normal sitcom situation. Time travel, a troupe of clowns in search of revenge, a rave organized by models… there really is something for everyone.
And best of all, although 'Close Enough' already has two seasons that can be seen on Netflix, his episodes are very short and pass quickly. Although each season is technically divided into 8 chapters of approximately 20 minutes, in reality each episode consists of two much smaller and more digestible "pills", with a self-contained story that unfolds very quickly.
And it is that from what would be an exploration of a modern family, we end up in all sorts of situations with touches of sci-fi and even creepypasta. Part of the show's grace is in its characters and how, as the plot progresses, we learn more about them and their respective neuroses.
Of course it also helps that in the original version it has a majestic cast led by JG Quintel himself with Gabrielle Walsh, Jessica DiCicco, Jason Mantzsoukas, Kimiko Glen and Danielle Brooksbut if you prefer to see it dubbed in Spanish, the Spanish dubbing is also very well balanced with this high bar.
Shortening and with the right ration
“Close Enough” is a series perfect for a marathonwhich although it has a certain continuity can be seen without the need to follow a dense frame, and with short and very light chapters who further expand this strange universe through their little psychedelic and delirious sketches.
It has an apparent very simple "adult animation" style that may not be for everyone, but it surprises you in terms of visual effects and certainly works perfectly with this type of humor. And beyond it all, 'Close Enough' is a series that looks very fast, which leaves you with a good body and it helps you let out a few good laughs and stay super comfortable.
The third season premieres April 7 in the United States via its original home, HBO Max, so it's time to keep our fingers crossed that it arrives here soon.
