The movie "Black Crab" became one of Netflix's last big hits. The film co-written and directed by Adam Berg part of a novel jerker virdborgwhich follows quite closely in many respects, but there is two fundamental changes that completely alter the vision of history.
The first and most important is that in the novel the protagonist is a man and not a woman - we left from Karl Edh to Caroline Edh. Noomi Rapace does a great job in "Black Crab," but the truth is that Berg decided on this change before the actress came on board, as he clarified in an interview with Screen Rant:
Right from the start, when we started talking about the script and the film, it seemed to me that… The book was written 20 years ago. I think society was slightly different back then, and obviously we've evolved in a lot of ways. Having a female lead seemed normal to me, and it felt right. For me, it was very important that it didn't look like a catchy movie on the military side. We wanted there to be more humanity, so it was a good way to get away from everything that had been seen before.
Berg also points out that once she met Rapace, she was very clear that she had to play her and that the character was written with her totally in mind. Additionally, he clarified the following about the other change, since in the book there is also no girl who motivates the attitude of the protagonist:
In the book, of course, there is no girl; does not exist. But we wanted to give him a motivation that was outside of any mission. It was not this. The film, at least for me, is about what you are willing to do to get what you want or to survive or help your loved ones. What are you willing to sacrifice for your freedom or for your survival? I think that's the bottom line, and you just had to find the themes to elevate that.
The truth is that the film would be very different without these two details, especially with regard to the girl, since it completely changes the motivations of its protagonist, since it is the only reason why he accepts this almost suicidal mission. For my part I think Berg was right to look for a more human and emotional touch to the story, how about you?
