Will Butler, founding member of Arcade Fire and brother of frontman Win Butler, has announced his departure from the band. In a thread on Twitter today, he explains: “I left at the end of last year, after the new record was finished. There was no serious reason beyond the fact that I have changed – and the band has changed – over the past almost 20 years. It's time for new things. He adds, “The band is still my friends and family. He says he's working on a new solo album (the sequel to 2020's Generations) and music for a play by David Adjmi and has "a few other projects in the works".
Will has been notably absent from the band's performances this week as they release a new album US, their first in five years. Dan Boeckner, best known as a member of Wolf Parade, was replaced. It's not yet known if Boeckner will stay with Arcade Fire or what kind of long-term plans they have to replace Will.

I was at the Paul Farmer memorial service last weekend. The words of the ceremony and the challenge of his life remain in my head: pic.twitter.com/32K4Svwbsp
