If you got a new set of Airpods for Christmas or bought yourself a new laptop on Cyber Monday, you probably still have its predecessor lying around somewhere.
Instead of keeping it in a drawer or under your bed, you could sell it for a good buck, says Byron Binkley, founder of Sella, a service that will sell your used items for you on marketplaces like Craigslist, eBay and Facebook. .
"It's a great time to unload gadgets and electronics that may have been replaced in the last six months over the holiday season," he says. “They depreciate quickly. This value vanishes into the ether. »
Even if your device is a bit older, you can probably sell it for a decent price. “Overall, the value [of old tech gear] goes beyond what people think,” Binkley says. “People think a four-year-old laptop or iPhone isn't worth it. [to sell], but he is. They should definitely sell them. »
Before listing an item, decide what's more important to you: whether it sells for a high price or with minimal effort on your part. Depending on your priorities, you can sell your old tech gear in different ways.
How to sell technology to make the most money
Many platforms take a large chunk of the profit, so to make the most money, you'll want to list it yourself, says Kristin McGrath, shopping expert at RetailMeNot. You can do this on sites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Swappa, where you can set your own price.
Keep in mind that there are still fees. For Facebook Marketplace, the selling fee is 5% per send, or a flat rate of 40 cents for sends of $8 or less. Fees on eBay vary by category and final price: for laptops, it's 10% plus 30 cents per order. Swappa has a 3% fee.
“Listing your own products takes more time, but it will allow you to make the most money possible on your used items,” she says.
If you don't want to take the time to do this, you can use take-back programs. “Amazon, Apple, Samsung and Best Buy all have take-back programs for recycling and savings on your next tech purchase,” she says.

How to sell technology in the most effective and easy way
There are many sites that will resell an item for you, but they fix the price and can take a significant chunk of the profit. “Sites like Gazelle, Nextworth and Cellcashier are easy to use,” says McGrath.
On these sites, you will only have to choose the make, model and condition of your device and get a quote. For example, Gazelle is offering $351 for an 4-inch Apple iPad Pro 11th Gen with 128GB, if it's in "excellent condition."
“If you like the quote, you send the device to the dealer and get paid, but often at a price lower than the actual value,” she says.
Don't forget to erase the data
Before selling a tech item, remember to wipe your data, adds McGrath.
“For any technology item you plan to sell, you should erase from the hard drive any data or personal information that may still be on the device, as well as disconnect from any location sharing and social media applications,” she says.
It also doesn't hurt to wipe down the hardware, she says, so shoppers feel like they're getting a product without too much wear and tear.
