It's not always understandable how an Oscar win happens — in this case, an Oscar winner provides some insight.
One of the greatest rock bands of our time receives a high-energy biopic that stayed on the German cinema charts for months. We're talking about the movie Queen «Rhapsodie bohémienne», which traces the rise of the group led by Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek) to the legendary Band Aid concert in the 1980s. You can now see the biographical film on Netflix.
With Sky Q you can also easily stream the Netflix offer.
Even in the movies, it was the musical performances that particularly stood out, with Queen songs such as "We Will Rock You", "Don't Stop Me Now" and "Radio Gaga" still being hits today. catchy – from “Bohemian Rhapsody” attracts attention, it is better not to start at all. At the 2019 Oscars, the band weren't just allowed to open the glamorous show, the biopic won four Oscars during the night - well-deserved for Rami Malek as best actor, among others. At this year's awards, however, there was one particular outrage:
Oscars 2022: Will Smith causes a scandal
In 2019, "Bohemian Rhapsody" was honored alongside Malek for Best Sound, Best Sound Editing, and Best Editing. When it came to the last of those awards, however, opinions were divided, as one scene in particular was criticized for showing too many unmotivated cuts in just 107 seconds. Some even went so far as to call this scene a "bad editing masterclass" (via Thomas Flight). You can watch this scene here:
The Oscar-winning actor reacts with concessions
Best Picture Editing Oscar winner John Ottman, who has edited films like 'X-Men: Days of the Future' and 'The Usual Suspects' in the past, said on 'Score: The Podcast' a few months later winning the Oscar that the much-quoted scene was actually designed differently.
“The original scene where they meet John Reid was shot in the studio because the story demanded it. But I swapped the concerts. The concerts in Japan and the tour in the United States initially took place in a different order. Now, when they met John Reid, the dialogues no longer made sense. So we had to redo the scene. […] What happened is that the studio is generally eager to get the first act done. But with this film, audiences demanded more with each test screening. […] So the idea was that meeting John Reid should be more like a montage. So I looked at the original version of the scene, […] made it faster, faster, faster, cut, cut, cut. But you want to leave reactions inside. So since you wanted to keep the old stuff, but only had half the time in the scene, it went too fast.
This is a thrilling behind-the-scenes look at the Hollywood Dream Factory. The film "Bohemian Rhapsody" had many problems during production. At first Sacha Baron Cohen was assigned to the project as Freddie Mercury, but creative differences between him and the still active band members around Brian May and Roger Taylor caused him to leave.
Director Bryan Singer was fired as the film neared the end of filming, and Dexter Fletcher had to step in and take on the rest of the responsibility - but isn't officially listed as an additional director in the finished film. As John Ottman has now clarified, he isn't particularly happy with some scenes himself, but had to come to an agreement in consultation with the film's producers in order to complete the film. His biggest goal was to make the film "emotional". Now you can check how it pulled off and if you noticed the many cuts yourself on Netflix, where 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has been playing since April 1, 2022.
