Cinema is a universal marvel, a unique art that, fortunately, comes from all over the world. And, in addition, it has a multiplicity of stories to tell, traversed by its contexts, its culture, the social situation and many other things.
In this case, in Netflix hides a film from Taiwan, a spectacular drama film which is a real gem. From the land of great films like Eat Drink Man Woman or the formidable A City of Sadnessthis story also goes through the personal dramas of the inhabitants of the small Asian nation.
a gripping drama
The Scorching Sun tells the story of a dysfunctional family. A strange father has two sons. The miner has always been problematic and has generated problems for him. His crimes eventually land him in jail, so the hurt and confused father places all his hopes and expectations on his eldest son, someone who has always gone unnoticed and not comfortable with exposure.
Without rushing the moments, without forcing the situations, but above all without watering down anything (nor over-dramatizing), its director Chung Mong-hong, who is also a screenwriter and director of photography, tells us from the raw, explicit and implicit. There are no colored lights here It's a family that tries to move forward, with its faults, its pretensions, but also its virtues and the desire to love.. But they clearly don't know how to do it.
As always when exploring other cultures, there are many details that hold our attention, even in a long film (more than 2 hours), but never becomes unpleasantly long. Also, how does any serious deep cinema that attempts to deconstruct normalized meaningalso escapes easy or comfortable exits, which these dramas often end up embracing.
