Season 3 of 'The Umbrella Academy' won't be the only superhero series Netflix releases in 2022, as one of DC Comics' most acclaimed stories will be part of its catalog very soon: 'The Sandman'.
On June 6, 2022, the platform of Streaming released the first trailer for “The Sandman” on his social media. The video shows a few characters that will be key to the plot, like Johanna Constantine and Dream himself.
"The Sandman": what will it be and when will the Netflix series be broadcast?
The new Netflix show will be based on the award-winning graphic novel series “The Sandman,” written by Neil Gaiman, in which he mixed elements of mythology with certain DC Comics characters.
According to the official synopsis, the series will focus on Dream, the Master of Dreaming, a place we humans go to when we sleep and which shapes our deepest dreams and fantasies.
But when Dream is captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a chain of events that changes the dream world forever. To restore order, Dream must travel through different worlds and timelines in order to fix his mistakes. Along the way he will meet old friends and foes, some humans, while others his existence can only be defined as cosmic.
Netflix's 'The Sandman' will be released on August 5, 2022 simultaneously in all regions of the platform and the first season will have 11 episodes.
'The Sandman': Who is the protagonist of this Netflix series?
The series protagonist will be Dream, also known as Morpheus. He is one of the seven Eternals, incarnations of the fundamental aspects of life whose power exceeds that of a god. He is played by British actor Tom Sturridge.
He is the lord not only of dreams, but also of everything that does not exist in reality. Although his form can change depending on who is looking at him, he is usually depicted as a lean, extremely white man with wild black hair. He wears loose clothing, which gives him the appearance of a wizard, and he often wears a gas mask or a green hat.
Other of his favorite appearances are that of a star-eyed man of African descent or a black cat, although he sometimes adopts the body of any other animal, but retains his feline head.
He is an immortal being, but he can kill himself to make room for another aspect of his being. With his sand, he can put anyone to sleep and take them to the realm of dreams, where he has complete control.
In the preview, we see Dream accompanied by other characters, such as his assistant Lucienne, played by Vivienne Acheampong, who informs him of everything that has happened in his kingdom in his absence.
Some of Dream's siblings also appear, others from the seven Eternals known as Death and Desire, played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Mason Alexander Park respectively.
Johanna Constantine will also have a significant participation. She is the ancestor of John Constantine and although in the comics she and Dream meet during the French Revolution, in the Netflix series it looks like the meeting will take place in modern times.
Although the appearance of Lucifer is expected from the hand of Gwendoline Christie, apparently the villains will be John Dee, better known as Doctor Destiny and Corinthian. In the comics, Doctor Destiny is a powerful foe, able to take on the Justice League through a dream-granting device. Corinthian for his part was created by Dream himself, but becomes a living nightmare thanks to his obsession with killing humans.
It's possible that in season one of "The Sandman," Dream will spend his time mending the rifts in his kingdom, while also seeking out and capturing these villains.
