Before the launch of The Last of Us Part 1 September 2, The naughty dog released a new post and video detailing all the improvements the remake has made to the original game.
Since its initial announcement in June, The Last of Us Part 1 has been aggressively marketed as a full remake, not just a PS5 remaster of the existing PS4 remaster. Of course, it took a lot more work from the developers, and despite that, the fact that it will cost $70 seems like a sore point for many fans. In response, Naughty Dog wanted to show off what you'll get for that price.
« For me, what makes it a remake rather than a remaster is the sum of its improvements“, explains the creative director of the remake, Shaun Escayg. " It's not just about the same characters, environments, art direction, etc., but better material. We completely redesigned everything from the art direction, to the lighting, to the design of the characters themselves"
« We've applied everything we've learned over the past ten years through original new technology and used it to create something that stays true to the original, but reinvented in an up-to-date way."
In particular, you'll notice a more detailed and interactive world where everything has a reaction. Light will filter through the trees, moss will move through the water as you approach, and abandoned cars will shake as they shower us with bullets.
The PS5's improved hardware also allows for smarter NPCs. The AI will be able to analyze the environment it finds itself in and adapt accordingly, which should make encounters with enemies more interesting and varied than the original game's pre-written and limited baddies. Additionally, the PS5 allows 128 active NPCs, while the PS3 only allowed eight at a time in the original The Last of Us.
« We have more dynamic encounters, so things like stealth and ambush will work in more situations says the programmer John Bellomy. " All this makes the game more interesting for players. The game is not always played the same way. It's possible to put yourself in new and exciting situations that even we at Naughty Dog may not be able to predict."
Of course, this is all on top of the usual perks of a PS5 remake or remaster, such as improved animations, 3D sound, haptic feedback, and DualSense adaptive triggers. Generally that's a good thing, but it means we'll have to relive the game's most traumatic scenes in even greater detail, which means they'll be even more emotionally demanding.
