The Group Policy Editor is a very useful tool for Windows operating systems. It can be used to fix a wide variety of problems, but not all versions of Windows have it preinstalled.
Only Windows Pro, Enterprise and Ultimate editions come with this tool, while it does not appear in Home edition. This was the case in previous versions of Windows, this is also the case in Windows 10.
Some Windows enthusiasts/programmers have found a way to install Group Policy Editor on all Windows versions.
windows 7 forum davehc created its own installer for the Group Policy Editor (and user @jwills876 posted it on DeviantArt).
And thanks to these guys, we can show you how to install Group Policy Management Console on all Windows versions including Windows 10 Home.
Is it possible to download the Group Policy Editor?
There are several ways to install the Group Policy Management Console and unfortunately downloading is not one of those options as it is a core feature of Windows.
It is possible to install this feature on all versions of Windows, and we have written a guide on how to install Group Policy Management Console on Windows 11, you might want to check it out.
If you want to activate gpedit.exe on Windows 11, the process is quite simple and similar to Windows 10, so you will be able to do it in a few moments.
How can I install Group Policy Editor on Windows 10 Home?
1. Download the Group Policy Editor Activation Tool
- Download the installer from jwills876's DeviantArt page.
- Before running any downloader you will need to go to the following location and copy the group policy et GroupPolicyUsersGroupPolicyUsers folders and the gpedit.msc file: C: \ Windows \ SysWOW64
- Paste them into the following folder: C: \ Windows \ System32
- Now launch the installer, follow the instructions, but close it at the last step (don't press the finish button).
- Now go to the following folder: C:\Windows\Temp\gpedit
- Right click on x86.bat (or x32.bat, if you are using a 32-bit version of Windows Home), Choose Open with, and select Buffer (If you don't like Notepad and want more alternatives, you can check out this list of best note-taking apps.).
- In the document, you will find a total of 6 lines of code that contain the following string: %username%:f
- replace each %username%:f with “%username%:”f (e.g. replace %WinDir%SysWOW64gpedit.dll /grant:r %username%:f with icacls %WinDir%SysWOW64gpedit.dll /grant:r “%username%”:f)
- Now just save the file and run it as administrator.
If nothing happens when you click Run as administrator, check out this helpful guide to fix the problem.
Also, if the copy and paste does not work and you cannot move the folders mentioned above, follow this guide to fix the problem quickly.
That is, after doing this, you should be able to run the Group Policy Editor on your Windows 10 Home. We should also mention that this method is originally for Windows 7, but it also works great on Windows 10.
We should also mention that this is not an official solution from Microsoft, so you should use it with caution.
2. Use DISM to install Group Policy Editor
- Group Policy Editor packages are available at %SystemRoot% Service Packs.
- Two files correspond to the Group Policy Editor:
- Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package*.mumet
- Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package*.mum.
- Writing order in the search field and click on Run as administrator to start the command prompt.
- Paste the following command and press Go in to run it:dism /online /norestart /add-package:”%SystemRoot%servicingPackagesPackageFileName
If you cannot find the Group Policy Editor in Windows 10, it may also be disabled. So follow the steps above to enable it.
3. How do I open the Group Policy Editor?
- press the Windows key + R to start the run the console.
- Writing gpedit.msc and click OK or press Enter.
- The Group Policy Editor should now launch and allow you to edit policies.
However, we need to specify that the policy edition only works locally because Windows 10 Home cannot join a domain in Active Directory, probably the main reason why the editor was not included.
4. Use Third-Party Software to Modify Group Policies
- Download Policy Plus from Github.
- You don't have to install anything because it is a portable application.
- Policy Plus starts immediately.
As you can see, the Policy Plus application is another way to modify Group Policy on any Windows system, including the Home version.
It's almost exactly the same as the Group Policy Editor, but it also has a search function that helps you find certain policies.
