The limits of the universe Streaming are obvious when trying to find out which of the top 100 movies of all time recently chosen in the famous Sight & Sound survey are available to watch online (NOTE: Availability here is only for Argentina and may not be the same in other countries). It has been said many times and it is well worth repeating: the platforms can be a great help in seeing productions from recent years, but there is little or nothing to be found in so-called classic cinema. With the exception of two of them (MUBI and Qubit), the possibilities of watching movies from more than 20 or 30 years ago on the most famous and commercial platforms are really minimal. And if you're not American, there's almost no chance of watching anything on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max and co.
In this list in which I include where you can see the top 100 movies (NOTE 2: I'm writing this on December 1, 2022, movies are coming in and out of platforms all the time) you will see that there are 40 that are not currently available in no platform. Of the 60 that can be seen, only 21 are on the most commercial platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, Star+ and HBO Max, among these the one with the most classics. On specialized platforms like MUBI or Qubit there are 50 (if the sum does not give them 40, it is because several films are on two or more platforms at the same time). Which basically means that if you have a few subscriptions to the big services of Streaming, you'll probably only be able to watch a handful of these movies.
Before leaving you with the list of films present on each site (NOTE 3: If you notice any mistakes or missing parts, please let me know, because "nobody's perfect" as they say in any of the movies on this list) I will provide you with a ranking of platforms against these 100 movies, to make decisions about which services to buy if you want to see them. Again, the total sum won't add up to 100 because there are a few movies on two, three, and more sites.
- -QUBIT: 38
- -MUBI: 13
- -HBO MAX: 12
- -NETFLIX: 4
- -First video: 4
- -STAR+: 4
- -PARAMOUNT+: 1
- NOT AVAILABLE: 40
All this serves to leave a final comment for those interested in classic cinema. We already know that there are "other ways" to find these films, but never completely abandon the physical format if you want to keep something that you consider important. Platforms – like almost the entire digital universe, if we don't think of the photos once “saved” in an inaccessible cloud today – are useful, but they are not the same thing as a video library. They don't have what you want and what they have, when you least expect it, also disappears.
