Steam Deck: Running Crysis at 60 fps requires big compromises, Digital Foundry analysis
– Reviews News
Steam bridge aims to offer the best of a handheld console and gaming PC, aiming for a balance between performance and portability. Yes, but… Does Crysis turn on us? I am passionate about technology Digital foundry decided that for Valve's console-PC, the moment of the "baptism of fire" had come, testing its hardware with the famous Crytek title which, in its time, had brought many configurations to their knees. The result? Good at 30fps but stable at 60fps is a target that requires too many compromises.
Concretely, Digital Foundry tested the remastered version released in 2020 on Steam Deck with various presets, including the friendly “Ci gira Crysis? », and custom configurations. Tech enthusiasts are generally pleased with the results, noting however that Valve's console/PC can't afford to shoot at 60fps stable or at maximum settings.
In an attempt to hit the 60fps target with Crysis, Digital Foundry tried to lower all settings to a minimum and even lower the resolution (which has a huge CPU impact) down to 540pbut compromises along these lines are unacceptable, given that "shadow quality and pop-in are poor and the transition of objects from 2D sprites to 3D objects becomes hilarious", while using a lower resolution it becomes impossible to engage in gunfights over long distances, compromising the gameplay experience.
Digital Foundry recommends using the medium preset (considered equivalent to "very high" in the original release), at resolution 1280x720p (even at the cost of having very thin black bands at the edge of the screen) and blocking the framerate at 30fps. In this way, a pleasant and stable overall experience is achieved, even superior to that of the PS4 version in terms of vegetation density and performance consistency.
