Jason Pierce picks and chooses his moments with great care: on spiritualized songs, the introduction of an instrument is more deliberate than ever, appropriately timed to weave its way into your psyche suddenly and a bit at a time. that time.
Take the first single from Spiritualized's new album, Everything was beautiful“Always Together With You” – as the song builds to a cascading crescendo, it finds a natural ending point around four minutes. But then, very quickly, the song opens up again, with its vocals, dramatic guitars and harmonies. bumping into each other repeatedly, creating a hypnotic energy that borders on manic.
It's one thing to experience "Always Together With You" aural, but pair it with its intense, environmental-collapse-focused music video, and the unwavering love that Pierce sings ends up seeming creepy. This dichotomy is exactly what characterizes the best parts of Everything was beautiful (released April 22). For his ninth studio album, Pierce (aka J. Spaceman) mixes enchantment with hidden notes of pain and anguish, love with a sense of fleeting vulnerability.
Pierce has always been a powerful agent of big-screen emotions channeled through incredibly specific musicality; his perfectionist ideals have certainly changed since the legendary Ladies and gentlemen, we're floating in spacebut there is still a sense of merging the organic and the natural with a truly maximalist feel.
In our conversation, Pierce admits to being "obsessed" with creating music, but when he does Everything was beautiful during the pandemic, he felt relieved to have the space and time to be obsessive: “I didn't have to worry about not being invited to the party. I didn't have to worry about what else was going on because that was all there was to it.
Now in Spiritualized's 32nd year, you'd think it would get easier for Pierce to be vulnerable when crafting these massive songs, but according to Pierce, it's harder than ever to stay open. “I find it very difficult to do,” says Pierce, “but I find that I have to keep raising the bar as I get older. Having dabbled heavily in country, blues and gospel sounds throughout his career with Spiritualized, it's clear that Pierce is always fascinated by a free and uninhibited sound, a lifted and beautifully oversized simple expression.
