World champion Max Verstappen is no longer working with the creators of the Netflix documentary 'Drive to Survive'. Reviews of the documentary are getting louder and louder, especially from Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris and Damon Hill.
Red Bull Racing star Max Verstappen confirmed during testing in Bahrain that there will be no further cooperation with the creators of the Netflix documentary 'Drive to Survive'.
The 1 Formula 2021 world champion says of the American Formula 1 documentary: “As far as I'm concerned, everything was ruined in Season 1. I'm down to earth. I just want facts, you don't have to spice things up for me. I understand that Netflix wants to make the series more interesting. But that's not my thing. I could watch it and find out again how over the top it all is. And then I watch something else on Netflix. »
Last October, the 20-time Dutch GP winner had already criticized “the fact that the series shows rivalries that do not even exist in this way. that's wrong. I understand a certain level of dramatization to increase the popularity of Formula 1 in America. But as a pilot, I don't want to be part of it. »
Netflix is treading delicate ground between entertainment and reality. Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz also complained: “Those fans who really know Formula 1, of course, noticed that a rivalry between me and Lando was overdone. »
But the Madrid native also says: “Netflix is certainly capable of evaluating such mistakes and trying to make it more realistic next time. »
Lando Norris also doesn't like that Formula 1 fans can get the wrong impression: "There are comments here and there that just don't belong. Then when you're the person in question who said something, you don't appreciate that statement being moved to a completely different place. The Englishman doesn't like the way his internal team duel with Carlos Sainz was portrayed, nor how it was replayed with Daniel Ricciardo.
So how fake is the Formula 1 documentary? Formula 1 champion Damon Hill even goes so far as to say: “Especially when it comes to the rivalry between the two team bosses Toto Wolff and Christian Horner, a facade is being built here. I find it sad, because that's why these two camps have emerged among the fans. »
The 22-time English GP winner said: "Let's be clear - the way Netflix is making Formula 1 more popular is a phenomenal thing for the sport. It has changed a lot. But especially with Wolff and Horner, I thought a few times in 2021 – that statement was pretty unseemly. And I hope that was action. I don't think they are doing anyone a favor by being abusive. »
