The series based on the play by Guillem Clua will be broadcast on the platform of Streaming this December 7.
December is the ultimate Christmas month, so that only means one thing: Christmas entertainment. Many platforms diffusion They put their batteries in to release original Christmas content, and this was the case with Netflix with Smiley, the romantic comedy with Carlos Cuevas and Miki Esparbé.
The series It is based on the play of the same name by Guillem Clua and originally starring Albert Triola and Ramón Pujol, the latter having a fairly prominent role in the fiction. The story mainly revolves around Álex and Bruno. Álex has just had a heartache.
He had had his hopes with a boy who, after a few weeks, had turned him into a textbook. And that didn't suit him. So he picks up the phone and prepares to ask for an explanation with a voice message that will have the most unexpected consequences. Because he just sent it by mistake to Bruno, whom he doesn't know at all. Thus begins an amusing love story.
It's a work from the beginning that we did without any pretension, in a very small room, with two friends like Ramon Pujol and Albert Triola. The intention was to talk about us, especially me. From my sentimental life,” explains Guillem Clua, creator of the series and the play. “About what it was like to be gay in contemporary Barcelona with apps and all that. Therefore, there was an exercise in opening the heart and speaking my reality. With all the honesty in the world and laughing at myself. The basis was that. That's what worked. I think that's why so many people liked it, because we weren't just talking about the niche of the collective, that yes there are winks, but it's appealing to something more common to tell how we fell in love, fell in love, sabotaged each other in our love stories… And that's why it worked in so many places in the world
The play ran for 10 years and people couldn't stop enjoying Álex and Bruno's love story. Even Miki Esparbé himself, who plays Bruno in the series, was captivated by the game from the first minute, so he didn't hesitate for a second to join smiley:
It has been 10 years since the play was first performed. I had the opportunity to see her in the first room. Carlos saw it later, but very closely, and the work that Guillerm Clua had staged with Ramon Pujol and Albert Triola caught our attention. Then in Madrid, then it was exported to many countries. And that caught my attention, the naturalness with which this permanent nod to all the clichés of romantic comedy was approached, but breaking with this perspective with which the two protagonists, unlike all the classics you've seen and that you have in mind, had a male and a female lead, in this case two males and how the play was approached and how it was able to be adapted to the series
Netflix Carlos Cuevas and Miki Esparbé in Smiley
In the series, one of its secondary characters, tells how difficult it was for her to accept that she could also choose love because she always grew up with the love affair between a boy and a girl and not between two girls or two boys. So Smiley is an attempt to change this idea in so many audiovisual works:
There are general references, very clearly. It's the first on Netflix, but there are many more to come with women, men, trans people…”, explains Carlos Cuevas. “In the case of Smiley, it's very beautiful because it's a romantic comedy and it also tells the story without drama and without major tragedies that has always accompanied the collective in fiction. It's another romantic comedy that happens at Christmas and things happen to people: they fall in love, they fall in love... And like a lot of classic movie references
Carlos Cuevas and Miki Esparbé have been chosen to play smiley. But why not take the protagonists of the theater?
When you make an adaptation, you should be aware that the resulting product is a new product. It must respond to new needs and to a normally much larger audience,” says Clua. “And in the case of Smiley, in addition, the fact that 10 years have passed since the original production has been added. Smiley tells the story of characters who are between 30 and 40 years old. Time has passed for everyone and my priority has always been from the beginning that Albert and Ramón can have a role in the series as they have had in such an important way. And they still have it in the room. Because there was a sequel they starred in. And they will always be part of the Smiley Theater. I wanted them to be in Smiley the series, but in the case of Ramón it was possible with a role that fits a glove and I'm delighted that it could have been like that
smiley premieres on Netflix in its entirety this December 7.
