The gangster movie is now almost 100 years old. One of the greatest examples of the genre is on Netflix, but not for long: Once Upon a Time in America is a 229 minute film, bloody, dazzlingly beautiful, but also controversial epic about love, betrayal and friendship. The movie should actually be much longer.
Epic Gangster TV Masterpiece: The Original Plan Was a 6-Hour Epic
As described by Den of Geek, director Sergio Leone wanted to release his milestone in two parts of three hours each. The gripping story of friends Noodles (Robert De Niro), Max (James Woods) and his gangster career could have been even more epic.

Eventually he scrapped the plan and cut the film. But even the much shorter European TV version of 229 minutes was still too long for its sponsors. A debacle has occurred.
Because even though moviegoers often confuse a director's extended version with the definitive working version, Distributors and cinema chains, on the other hand, are often angry: Films that are too long mean less screening time per day and therefore less money.
One of the greatest movies of all time got a version hated by critics
Probably for this reason, the Ladd Company producers cut Leone's new version from 229 minutes to two hours and 19 minutes without his consent, arranged all the scenes chronologically, and thus brought it to American cinemas. Unlike the European version, which elicited 15 minutes of continuous applause during the premiere (via Esquire), the American version was cut broken by reviews (via the New York Post).
It is therefore reassuring that the long version of 229 minutes is now considered the definitive version on DVD and TV and is therefore more widely distributed. It may not be six o'clock. But all the same one of the greatest films of all time will surely leave you speechless.
