Tennis fans get their will to survive
The start of 2022 couldn't have been better for the producers of Netflix's new documentation of the tennis circus: there's actually no more drama than the never-ending story of Novak Djokovic entering Australia . However, the world number one is unlikely to let the cameras get closer to him during the difficult days in Melbourne as Günther Steiner, the extremely open crew chief of the Haas Formula 1 racing team, permanently in "Drive to Survive".
This terrific series exemplifies what awaits tennis fans: a ruthless behind-the-scenes look at their favorite sport. At best, this gaze is so deep that the protagonists forget that they are being followed by cameras. Incidentally, Netflix is planning something similar with the PGA Tour.
Focus only on combined events?
In any case, the producers succeeded in one thing before the start of filming: to reconcile the various interest groups of the ATP, the WTA and the four Grand Slam tournaments. However, an identical transfer of the “Drive to Survive” concept probably won't work. Because if in Formula 1 all the main players are fully present on race weekends, in the tennis circus this only concerns the weeks of the majors and certain combined events such as Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome or Cincinnati.
It will therefore be exciting to see if the documentary is limited to these major events. Or if smaller events such as the WTA tournament in Bad Homburg or the Generali Open in Kitzbühel are also presented in one form or another.
