A great fighter come in less mentors a young man who makes him rediscover the illusion of the past and with whom he establishes a paternal relationship. This plot is interchangeable between Avery's film and the believe by Ryan Coogler.
The old Samaritan, like the old Rocky, has this imprint that the old Stallone knows how to give to his characters. A sort of strong, affable old man who finds it easy to endear himself.
Sly seems comfortable in roles that allow him to remain an action hero without being too physically demanding. Moreover, in this type of production, the actor born in Manhattan explores the most human side of characters who, like the actor himself, live the twilight of their career.
America's Decline
Like much of the world, major American cities have been hit hard by the economic crisis and the pandemic. Today, many of the country's iconic cities are rife with homelessness, drug-ridden streets and a growing sense of insecurity.
Like the most decrepit Gotham, the fictional city in which Samaritan hides is dominated by chaos, poverty, drugs and decadence. A current panorama, taken to the extreme, which reflects the concern of a society eager for new heroes.
Samaritan: A hero without a cape
A server is more interested in humanized heroes than superheroes with impeccable morals. Fortunately, the initial era of comics in which gray colors had no place gave way to more complex characters who give their stories creases and contours that we can more easily identify with.
Schut and Avery try to build a character that's less flat than those Supermans of the last century, but without too much fanfare. Samaritan is a disbelieving hero looking for a second chance.
It does not reach the complexity of the best Batman, nor the moral ambiguity of the characters of the great The Boys, but it tries, by another twist, to give us a hero who could currently live among us.
Satisfy without risking too much
Schut's writing and Julius Avery's directing create a character that is easy to sympathize with and Stallone knows how to give that balance between strength and sensitivity that characterizes his most emblematic characters.
In its opening section, Samaritan focuses on the relationship between a young man from a poor neighborhood (a sensational Javon Walton) and a fallen hero. The plot passes without surprises, between scenes that we have seen a thousand times, until a final act in which Avery, as if aware of building a most conventional film, reserves for us a surprise in the form of a plot twist.
A film in which everything is predictable, which keeps its promises and leaves you with a satisfied smile on your face. Samaritan is definitely a guilty pleasure. One of those very greasy chocolate donuts that you have to eat from time to time so as not to lose the pleasure.
