- The Nothing(1) phone is not able to reach its advertised brightness of 1 nits.
- Nothing has now dropped the phone's maximum brightness to 700 nits.
- A software update may allow the device to reach its advertised brightness.
No advertised brightness rating for the phone (1) seems to have some gray areas. The device can only reach 700 nits of maximum brightness, instead of the advertised 1 nits.
According to real-world tests conducted by German tech site ComputerBase (opens in a new tab), the Nothing (1) phone couldn't achieve brightness above 700 nits despite efforts to create scenarios that would allow it to to reach the advertised score. Nothing has since lowered the brightness of the budget Android phone on its website to reflect the new rating, which is 40% lower than its original claim.
In a statement to ComputerBase, Nothing confirmed that "maximum values are around 700 nits for brightness." The company has insisted that the hardware is capable of outputting 1 nits, but software limitations cap it at 200 nits.
"The hardware is capable of reaching a maximum brightness of 1 nits, but this is currently capped by the software at 200 nits," Nothing told XDA Developers (opens in a new tab). “This decision was made to ensure a balanced user experience in terms of heat and battery consumption. »
That said, the company is confident that the phone (1) will be able to achieve the promised brightness through a software update.
"The product team believes the 0-1200 nits range for the hardware is fine," the company told XDA. "They are considering a software update in the future to reach the peak of 1."
It's unclear at this time, however, when the company plans to release a patch to address this limitation. Nothing is currently monitoring consumer feedback, in an effort to understand if this needs to be addressed in future software updates. However, this will most likely impact temperature and battery life.
