Tom Cruise's determination to put his life on the line to pull off the biggest action scenes of the past decade, that 'The Need for Speed' engine that was the motto of his materialized 'Top Gun', is a phenomenon. fascinating. What drives someone to attempt to perform potentially kamikaze or impractical featsand without guaranteed glory at the end?
Interestingly, this last question was explored by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time in an aviation-focused film. Before his great epic films with 'Lawrence of Arabia' or 'The Bridge over the River Kwai', and after working as an editor for the Michael Powell Yes Emeric pressburgerun David Lee we could see it take flight with 'the sound barrier', a remarkable British film that can be seen on Netflix.
TOP 10 SERIES OF THE DECADE (2010-2019)
passion at full speed
Lean directs a script from the playwright Terence Rattiganon a pair of pilots determined to reach the speed of sound with a revolutionary aircraft. Behind the feat is a wealthy owner, who developed advanced technology for World War II, who encourages test pilots in his mad enterprise, including his daughter's fiancé.
The tensions are evident and the drama is developed with the elegance and right hand that would characterize the filmmaker's work. But what really stands out about this impressive film is that passion for capturing the art of aviationpartly inherited from his aforementioned time with The Archers, which is shot and presented with incredible rigor and exquisite visual craftsmanship.
Wanting to honor the incredible advancements made in aviation, Lean researched supersonic aircraft extensively, talking with aeronautical engineers to better understand the ins and outs of the craft which was later passed on to Rattigan. This is why, in many ways, flight sequences are perfectly designed and executedalmost made in a documentary way.
“The wall of sound”: flight into the unknown
This tremendous realism, together with a remarkable and remarkable exercise for the time, allows us present to us the anguished and extreme scenario in which these pilots find themselves. The dramatic scenes manage to carry some interesting weight as we know the real danger of flying situations, which can unknowingly take off and launch without being able to land safely.
They didn't count on the jaw-dropping "Top Gun: Maverick" trailers, but this classic exercise has its own kind of showmanship that's still going strong today. A great classic of cinema where David Lean was already showing signs of his masteryand it's a good piece to save those days of Tom Cruise-derived aeronautical hype.
