There are times when very unlikely miracles come from the most unexpected places. In a place like South Africa, a folk singer who has spent time in the United States can suddenly become hugely popular – making for a wonderful documentary. Or you can go out one of the most shocking sci-fi films of this century.
The one who launched a director that we are still trying to understand. One that he raised the alien invasions from another point of view. One that seems to have a sequel soon. And you have just over 48 hours to watch it on Netflix. It's 'District 9', by Neill Blomkamp.
From foreigners to refugees
Due to "Encounters of the Third Kind", we expected that contact with extraterrestrials was a transcendental experience that would give us a stark change or breakthrough technology. Or a massive attack. This is not the case in 'District 9'. The spaceship arrives, no less than Johannesburg, and the aliens descend, leaving them all but stranded.
The South African government is obligated to do something about the aliens who have been trapped in the country – not so much on the planet. Their solution is therefore to keep them in a refugee camp and the authorities come from time to time to take a look. In these, a sad civil servant (Sharlto Copley) goes on an inspection while cameras record him and makes contact with a strange device that will cause a significant change.
Leaving aside the incredible visual finish, especially in the digital effects, of a South African film -in which Peter Jackson produces and Sony also enters, okay-, Blomkamp's film opts for an interesting modesty for its sci-fi. The almost amateurish touch the mockumentary lends helps, but it manages to land itself in a nice zone between an ambitious proposition and a little movie its audience wants to find.
'District 9': an unprecedented success
What is impressive is that he achieves all these things. It's a remarkable spectacle, but it also seduces with the care it puts into the development of the story. She doesn't hold back when it comes to introducing shit, but she also forces you to take her seriously. And it's a story that wants to expose a terrible political situation and spread it around the world -Another thing is that the message remained in the world-.
This unprecedented success is so miraculous that it was almost obvious that Blomkamp was not going to be able to match it – although, unfortunately, we did not expect the latter to be so far below. It partly called into question whether what she accomplishes was really that impressive, but it also kept her in amber as a pearl of its kind. That's why it's better to take advantage of it while it's available.
