The third major of the 2022 golf season arrived with controversy swirling behind the scenes. However, the USGA ensured that as little wind as possible was removed from the sails of its first event as the contenders for the 2022 US Open began to take on the Country Club. It's the first time since 1988 that a national champion will be crowned in Brookline, Mass., and some of the top contenders are playing with great momentum.
Masters champion Scottie Scheffler put in a scorching effort through the back nine on Friday to enter the fray. Scheffler is aiming to become the sixth golfer to win the Masters and the US Open in the same season.
He was not the incoming favorite at Brookline, however. That honor belonged to Rory McIlroy, who entered the field hotter than anyone after defending his RBC Canadian Open title. McIlroy has three other top 10 finishes in his four previous starts and is one of four golfers to have finished in the top 10 in three (or more) of the last five US Opens.
McIlroy made the most of his momentum by opening play at the Country Club with a 67, and after a rocky start on Friday with a double bogey on the par-4 third, he birdied on three of his last seven holes to finish with a 69 and sitting just one shot away from the head – the same position he got into back in the day. If Rory gets the job done this weekend, he'll win his first major championship since 2014.
Meanwhile, the man who made the most headlines at the start of the week, Phil Mickelson, missed the cut along with a host of other stars.
