Netflix showed willingness to cancel the shows early. But new data reveals that the global landscape of Streaming bet on longer streaks.
According to data firm Ampere Analysis, more originals in Streaming were renewed for their second season or more than ever before during the first quarter of this year. The data related to emissions in Streaming from the United States and the United Kingdom.
This follows a trend seen throughout 2021. Ampere Analysis found that 51% of renewals of Streaming in the US and UK last year were in their fourth season or more, a 6% increase from 2020.
Of course, the coronavirus pandemic has ravaged the television and film industry in 2020.
But it's still worth noting that more than half of the renewals were for shows that lasted at least four seasons, suggesting a focus on investing in series with dedicated viewers. This is in stark contrast to a few years ago, when Ampere Analysis published a report which found that the services of Streaming were more likely to cancel shows earlier than traditional TV networks.
The company had analyzed 61 canceled shows between September 2018 and March 2019 and found that the series of Streaming average had a two-season shelf life, four seasons on cable and six and a half seasons on broadcast networks. Netflix accounted for 61% of cancellations of Streaming.
Since then, the main platforms of Streaming as Disney+, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Discovery+ and Peacock have joined Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video into the space, accelerating competition and the desire for shows with dedicated fanbases.
Ampere Analysis said Disney+ and Discovery+ are the main culprits behind the rise in renewals of Streaming. Unscripted series, which Discovery+ specializes in, accounted for the largest proportion of these renewals.
"For newcomers to Streaming like Disney+ and Discovery+, which have well-established fanbases for key IPs, it's easier for curators to make long-term commitments to titles they know viewers will love,” said Olivia Deane, senior analyst for Ampere Analysis.
The latest report from Ampere Analysis is also remarkable when comparing the largest space of Streaming with Netflix, which doesn't shake its reputation for canceling shows too soon.
The data company found that orders for new shows in the US and UK at Netflix were up 8% in 2021 compared to 2020. But the streamer's returning show renewals were down 2%.
Netflix however has an advantage in other international markets. It is investing heavily in content from countries like South Korea, where its biggest show “Squid Game” originated, and parts of Latin America, where it seeks to stem slowing growth. The company's large global footprint could become more of a priority after losing QXNUMX subscribers for the first time in a decade.
