Remember how hard it was to watch anime? Depending on where you called home, it used to be difficult, if not impossible, to watch the latest series. Only a few decades ago, people were trading DVDs (and before that, VHS tapes!), and the idea of simultaneous release seemed like a far-fetched fantasy.
Well, time passes and now anime is easy to find and watch. Thank God for that! It's now so accessible that, according to Variety, Netflix says more than half of its subscribers watched it last year. It's impressive and a good indication that yes, of course, anime is mainstream.
(In 2021, Netflix released forty anime titles. That's a good number, but keep in mind that, as Anime News Network points out, the service's definition of Streaming "anime" is not strictly limited to anime made in Japan.) "Netflix classifies Japanese anime as well as several Western anime titles as 'anime'," the site writes).
While those viewing percentages might be impressive, Netflix also noted that 90% of its Japanese subscribers watched anime last year. When you check out the top ten most-watched rankings on Netflix in Japan, they are full of anime.
"At the same time, interest in the anime has grown around the world, and more than half of our global users have listened to it in the past year," Netflix's Kohei Obara told AnimeJapan 2022. "From diversifying our slate to returning fan favorites, we want to continue to increase our users' discovery and love of anime, both in Japan and around the world, with this upcoming anime installment. on Netflix. »

Will these numbers continue to rise? Probably! It will be interesting to see how much they earn in the years to come. Because as long as anime is readily available, people will watch it.
