Thursday, 11 a.m. Economy bkThe market for video-on-demand services is very competitive: Many providers now want to convince with exclusive productions, so that some users use several services at the same time – or subscriptions to individual portals are put in pause several times. Ad-supported pricing has been in vogue for some time: Disney+ will launch such a model in the US later this year, and Amazon is acknowledging this development in the form of a channel called Freevee in Amazon Video. Netflix, the hitherto undisputed top dog, will soon follow. However, the upcoming ad-based tariff comes with considerable restrictions.
Ad-based plan: no downloads, no ad skipping
Portal customers Streaming usually have the ability to download content to play later. Many subscribers benefit from this: In this way, films and series can be played even if the Internet connection is not very attractive or simply not available – air travel is often mentioned as a typical application. Netflix's ad-supported rate, on the other hand, says goodbye to this handy feature: According to a Bloomberg article, there is a corresponding text passage in the iOS app code. This indicates that the downloads are available in all tariffs except the ad-based one. According to Bloomberg, the provider of Streaming also prohibits skipping ads and no controls are available during playback.
No pricing information known at this time
Netflix won't implement the new tariff until early 2023, according to the report. However, some of the contents of the giant's catalog Streaming is reserved for subscribers who book a rate without advertising. Bloomberg warns that Netflix may still reconsider some of the above decisions. So far, no pricing information is available. The basic tariff, which only offers SD quality, currently costs 7,99 euros per month.
