Norm MacDonald He left us at the end of last summer and we are still dealing with the drama. To better pass the duel, or perhaps not, Netflix has released the comedian's latest show. 'Norm Macdonald: Nothing special', is literally the last breath of one of the greatest American comedians of the last 30 years.
I'll say it one last time
If the accounts correct me, in 2017 Norm Macdonald was in full treatment for his leukemia, diagnosed and kept secret since 2014. That's when the incredible 'Norm Macdonald: Hitler's dog, gossip and trickery', an hour of the best possible standard, always so radical but a little more fearful than usual.
Because, while spouting hilarious nuggets about Germany, suicide or the pulpit, old Macdonald insisted on sending signals by talking about cancer, death, fear and old age. Seen now, a year after his departure, he is much more valid and, in a way, vital. Norm has always stuck to comedy. Until the end. And in this duel, he always emerged victorious.
And while this very limited and heartbreaking latest effort recently aired on Netflix is of course no match for the Canadian comedian's best recital, his desire to make you laugh (or be laughed at), at the sheltered from COVID and fearing that we are closer than ever to the end. In fact, this recording was a backup in case of problem. Unfortunately for everyone, everything went wrong.
The show, it couldn't be otherwise, comes with a significant additional charge: it was taped in early 2020, just before he underwent a complicated procedure. Macdonald would live another year and a half, but it seems the special was meant to come out after his death, so it looks like the work of a man facing his mortality. To do this, nothing better than his usual tastes, his phobias or his bad habits, like gambling.
I would never recommend this nothing special to anyone who wanted to enter the world of comedy. That's what Peacock's SNL seasons, his excellent films 'Trash Job' and 'Busted', two classic comedies starring Macdonald in top form, are for. But I think we have to check how far an artisan of laughter is able to go tell one last joke. Beyond the content, too long for an online broadcast via Zoom, the most exciting comes at the end.
When Macdonald decides not to drop a microphone he paid for out of pocket, the show ends and, seated in a room, his friends Dave Chappelle, David Letterman, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Molly Shannon and Conan O 'Brien remember the legacy and the artist. The anecdotes are funny, but in reality no one can avoid getting out of a duel that leaves them with a huge hole.
Macdonald never told them he was ill, and that discretion is honored in this meeting of colleagues, where the hat Norm wears in the recording sits on a table between Letterman and Chappelle, silently, with no one touching it. According to his friends, Macdonald was not one to show feelings, so his cap is there, with them, without fanfare. 'Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special', leaves the regular body. But goodbyes are like that.
