Paris (AFP) – The television series “Stranger Things” is one of the most popular on the Netflix platform, and an ideal laboratory for reviving old pop hits, thanks to the occult arts of its musical coordinator, Nora Felder.
The best known case is that of the cover of the song “Running up that hill” by the British singer Kate Bush. A success of 1985, which was still so in the summer of 2022.
On May 30, after the broadcast of the first episodes of the fourth season of the series on Netflix, "Running up that hill" climbed to the top listening places on Spotify, the leader in music platforms.
Downloads of the song "grew 8% globally," Spotify explained.
And as a rebound, other Kate Bush songs have become popular again, with a "1%" increase in downloads.
Nora Felder is the emcee of this phenomenon, something that takes more trickery than meets the eye.
" It's incredible ! We knew it would be special, because we already used The Clash's 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' in season one, and there was an uptick in downloads,” Felder told AFP during a telephone interview.
“But we never imagined that it would take on this dimension for Kate Bush,” he adds.
Felder saw his success with “Stranger Things” crowned with an Emmy Award.
Many more people now listen to his lectures, he explains.
Cyndi Lauper, Iggy Pop…
“People think it's enough to put on any good song,” he says.
"In fact, we coordinate all the aspects around the music of a project, whether it's the creative part as well as the negotiation of the rights of a song, or the choice of composers, musicians...", details this Californian, who has already coordinated the soundtrack of the series "Californication" or "Ray Donovan".
Felder worked in New York, first as a programmer in a club, then recruited by producer Phil Ramone (no connection with the Ramones) to record Paul Simon, Sinead O'Connor, Cyndi Lauper or Iggy Pop.
After fifty years, Felder is settled in Los Angeles, the epicenter of the film industry.
She knew that Kate Bush was "very selective" in the use of her repertoire.
“I took time to contact their representatives, explain to them what I represented [the canción] for the story, the characters.
But what Felder didn't know was that during the negotiations, Kate Bush was watching the show, and she liked it.
"When we received their approval, it was a great relief, because this song meets all the requirements of the series," he reiterates.
metallic flowers
"Running up that hill" was a hit four decades ago, unlike "Master of puppets," a song by heavy metal band Metallica, whose appearance on "Stranger Things" also had a multiplier effect.
“This song suits the character of Eddie very well, and everyone loves it. Some people reject metal like someone rejecting a book without opening it, but thanks to Eddie, the public opened the book and loved that Metallica song,” Felder said.
In the Netflix series, Eddie Munson appears in the fourth season as a rebellious young metalhead, guitarist in a small band, appreciated by those who know him closely.
In thanks for their song's renewed success, Metallica sent Felder flowers and a collector's edition of "Master of Puppets" (the title of the 1986 album) when the music coordinator was nominated for an Emmy.
“Now they follow me on the networks, and when I realized that, I said, 'oh, but it's Metallica!' »
"As far as music is concerned, I'm still a girl," she admits.
