The Squid Game was undoubtedly one of the Netflix productions that managed to surprise the whole world last year.
The idea of a game in which literal people in economic difficulty risk their lives to get a millionaire bag to solve their problems, has managed to become a media phenomenon.
Around October of last year, Netflix recognized the success of this series firsthand. Data confirmed by the Los Gatos, California service itself pointed out that in the first 28 days of release, The Squid Game was played by nearly 82 million accounts, making it the one of the most watched series in history during the mentioned period.
The success around the Korean production has been such that a second season has already been confirmed. However, Netflix wants to take the capitalization of the series a step further.
And now it's been announced that Netflix will be making a reality show based on The Squid Game, which was described by the service. Streaming itself as "the greatest show in television history".
This description can be understood from two points of view. On the one hand, we are talking about a program that intends to bring together 456 players from all over the world, who will compete to win nothing more and nothing less than 4,56 million dollars, or approximately 942 million Mexican pesos.
Netflix and its new bet for The Squid Game
Details on how Netflix will be able to recreate the theme of the series, eliminating the death factor (which is undoubtedly one of the big draws of the idea) are so far unknown. However, from Netflix they have already started releasing some details.
“The Squid Game has taken the world by storm with director Hwang Dong-hyuk's gripping story and iconic visuals. We are grateful for your support as we bring the fictional world to life in this massive competition and social experiment. Fans of the drama series will embark on a fascinating and unpredictable journey as the 456 real-world entrants navigate the greatest competition series in history, full of tension and unexpected twists, with the biggest prize money . Brandon Riegg, VP of Unscripted Series and Documentaries at Netflix.
So far it is known that the Netflix reality show will have 10 episodes which will be recorded in the UK under the production of Stephen Lambert, Tim Harcourt, Toni Ireland John Hay, Nicola Hill and Nicola Brown.
Release dates, nothing is known. What is certain is that Netflix has started recruiting the 456 participants via the SquidGameCasting.com website, where it is indicated that for now only people with a good command of the English language are admitted, with availability for record for four weeks originally scheduled for early 2023.
This is an experiment with which Netflix would seek to improve its position in the market for Streaming, where although it remains the leader, it has been hit in recent months by the arrival of brutal competition signed by Disney, HBO and even Paramount.
