From Playlist, they report that Oscar-nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig ('lady bird') has entered into negotiations to make future live-action film adaptations of 'The Chronicles of Narnia' for netflix. The platform officially announced its agreement with The CS Lewis Company in 2018, although since 2019 we had not heard of the project.
It will be the first major franchise for the director of films like 'little woman' (2019) or the aforementioned 'lady bird' (2017). Additionally, Gerwig recently wrapped production on the highly anticipated 'Barbie' starring Margot Robbie, and will soon pick up the black comedy also from Netflix, 'White noise'.
Under the agreement, all projects will be produced by Netflix and will be executive produced by Entertainment One's Mark Gordon, Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber. In total, the series, consisting of seven novels, has sold over 100 million copies worldwide and has been published in over 50 languages. This will be the first time that the same company has owned the rights to all seven works from the Narnia universe.
Released between 2005 and 2010, the film adaptations, 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian'O'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' grossed nearly $1,6 billion at the worldwide box office.
