Over the past decade, streaming services have become the main source of entertainment for many people, thanks to the varied content they have in their platforms.
Netflix is one of them. According to Wall Street estimates, the confinement caused by the pandemic contributed to the growth of the number of new customers of this platform by 15,8 million, a figure which exceeds the number of users of other services of Streaming.

And it is a fact that the number of users would increase even more if the account could not be shared. Apparently, Netflix has already taken steps to prevent people from sharing their account with other users who don't live under the same roof.
Since 2019, the first news started to emerge that the platform would limit the sharing of passwords so that each user pays their own fees. This would only apply to people who do not live in the same house, i.e. a cousin, uncle, friend or partner.
And while these limitations were only seen with platform-tested features, such as pop-up messages warning people who share a password and don't live with the password holder to pay for their own service, it now seems that they are ready to eradicate this problem.
Verification Codes
The next step Netflix will take to prevent people from sharing your account is to use verification codes. This method will consist of verification through a code of numbers and which will be sent by email or SMS to enter it in the profile and continue viewing the content.
It is expected that this measure will be gradually adapted to each user so that the platform does not lose subscribers.
Earlier, Netflix spokesperson Ebony Turner clarified in a statement that this measure applies to “[..] ensure that people who use Netflix accounts are authorized to do so. »
On the other hand, some users wondered if it was possible to skip this step. And the reality is that it is possible and it's that easy, because just ask the account owner for the code or there's the option to "Check Later" so you can continue viewing your content.
Although it is not for an indefinite period, there will come a time when you will necessarily have to enter the code to verify your identity.
We will now have to wait if, over the months, Netflix decides to apply this restriction to more regions or create new restrictions that prevent users from continuing to share their accounts.
Is it illegal to share my Netflix account?
Although it may seem like an innocent act to share your account with your loved ones, the reality is that you may be violating the Terms of Service of this platform.
If the terms and conditions of the Netflix services are reviewed, there is a section in which it is disclosed that the user's account cannot be shared: "The Netflix service and all content viewed through the service are intended for your personal and non-marketable use and may not be shared with anyone outside your household. »
This means it's illegal to share the account with someone else you don't share the same roof with. Additionally, it also states that “the account holder must maintain control of all Netflix-enabled devices used to access the service and not reveal the password to anyone,” an action several users failed to comply with.
Netflix isn't the only company trying to crack down on shared user accounts, Spotify has also done so with several similar methods.
