Founded on August 28, 1997, it reigned for a decade, but today it poses new challenges and solutions so as not to lose its hegemony
The cats, a small town in Santa Clara County, California. There, modestly, Netflix was created 25 years ago. It is today a giant, invaded by the crisis which does not seem to affect as much the other monsters of the Streaming. Reed Hastings Jr and Marc Randolph, its founders began by offering a mail-order movie rental service in the United States. At first it didn't work out, as the VHS tape was inconvenient to send by mail. But DVD eventually triumphed over VHS, and its weight and volume were lighter. Also, Hastings and Randolph's big breakthrough was creating a web page from which customers ordered their movies.
They started with 925 titles available and, in a few years, the collection reached 100 films. Customers paid four euros, plus two more for shipping, and could rent the film for several days. They then established a flat rate of 20 euros per month and the possibility for the user to rent a a complete film saga or television series and have it for four weeks.
The new audiovisual landscape of the XNUMXst century
Hastings, born in 1960, is a businessman and philanthropist. He holds the position of President and CEO of Netflix, in addition to being a member of the Board of Directors of Facebook. Randolph, two years younger than his partner, fits the typical image of the Silicon Valley entrepreneur. Two “mad geniuses” who, without reaching the extremes of Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos or Mark Zuckerberg, have made an impressive contribution to the design of the audiovisual landscape of the XNUMXst century.
They met when they coincided in the company Pure Atria, dedicated essentially to the generation of programs to solve errors and software problems: Hastings was the CEO of the company and Randolph ended up performing the functions of marketing manager. Legend has it that they shared a car on the way home and their friendship. And there's also a rumor, never confirmed, that Hastings started modeling the concept for Netflix when, on one occasion, he had to pay a $30 fine for returning the videotape to his video store late. 'Apollo 13'.
Nearly 12 employees
The company became official on August 28, 1997 and grew like wildfire until reaching a capital of more than 36 million euros and having 000 employees on the payroll. In 11, they became public, with one euro per share, and eight years later they already had 12 million subscribers. For a decade, it has been the most popular platform, with successful series (produced or distributed) such as 'House of cards', 'Orange is the new black', 'The walking dead', 'Stranger Things', 'La casa de papel', 'The Squid Game' or 'Lady's Gambit', and prestigious films such as 'Roma', 'Mank', 'The Irishman' and 'The Power of the Dog'.
The introduction of advertisements
After the resumption of activity following the forced imprisonment At home during the first months of covid-19, Netflix began to see its black hole grow. By mid-2022, they had lost nearly a million subscribers and 300 employees had been laid off. The new Netflix plan, after its alliance with Microsoft, consists of penalizing multi-shared accounts in which a single subscriber pays and, above all, the new rate between seven and nine euros per month – which will be operational at the end of this year in half a dozen countries – for the consumption of films and series with four minutes of advertising for one hour of viewing.
