Netflix, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and other studios are ignoring calls to guarantee safe abortions for their employees
A few days ago, news broke that hundreds of creative women, from producers to actresses, had signed a very specific petition to ensure the creation of protocols at companies that promised to help their employees obtain safe abortions. As everyone knows, abortion laws in the United States can be very harsh and some even prevent an abused woman or a minor from undergoing the necessary treatment. In this context, Hollywood tried to show that it was more than just words, but the exercise has failed now that most companies have decided to ignore the petition signed by names like Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay and Mindy Kaling among many others.

US policy allows each state to make specific decisions regarding its pro or anti-abortion rules. To no one's surprise, this went to extremes. While some states and cities allow free, unrestricted abortion based on personal criteria, others have gone to great lengths to isolate women who seek one. There are already cases of sexually assaulted minors who have to travel for hours to other places in order to have an abortion that ensures their health. Other women who have difficulty maintaining their pregnancy are also at risk because they no longer find the same health system. The threat that any doctor or anyone who decides to help a woman have an abortion will be imprisoned has sparked outrage.
The problem is that little has been done to ensure change. For whatever reason, a woman seeking an abortion will find one; The problem is that your health can be at risk if this is not done with the necessary care. Besides constantly demonstrating the hypocrisy of leaders who also refuse to help single mothers and children in general, Hollywood has been sold as a land free of these restrictions and with a much more open mind. However, it has now been proven once again that words are not enough.

Companies such as Disney and Netflix have said they will financially help employees seeking safe abortions who have to travel to another state for work. However, activists have always seen in these words an empty promise. Major creators, who have generated millions for these services, have signed a petition asking these companies to create a real protocol to protect their employees, from the field of health to the legal field and to ensure their privacy. They were also asked to stop supporting politicians and anti-abortion associations with donations.

After the men's inaction was criticized, several creators joined the petition and signed a new document to support their colleagues. Among the hundreds of names were Taika Waititi, Jordan Peele and JJ Abrams. Companies like Netflix, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBCUniversal, Apple, Paramount, AMC and Lionsgate had until August 10 to respond, but new reports of IndieWire Yes deadline show that they didn't take it seriously.
The official response from some companies was quite vague and without giving any real details on what had been agreed, while others did not respond at all:
We share your concerns about the health, safety and well-being of our dedicated employees and the people who support our productions. We believe that they should have access to safe and effective health care and that their privacy should be protected.
[…] We want to assure you that we are individually focused on supporting the health, safety, well-being and privacy of our respective employees and those who support our productions as we continue to monitor this ever-changing situation. We look forward to working with you to continue creating great content for our audiences around the world.
In other words, the companies are hoping this quiet response will calm the waters between their biggest creators a bit. It is certainly a rather hypocritical movement considering that these production companies take advantage of trends to make films and series which have a pro-abortion and feminist message which has benefited them with the public, but which they do not seem to share in reality.
