The rock band Muse has never exactly hidden its politics. Remember 2009's "Uprising" bop, which included lines like "Rise up and take the power back / It's time for the big cats to have a heart attack"? This time, the boys may have taken things a bit too far. Muse has released a new single, “Compliance,” which the band previously teased with a lengthy, head-spinning post on social media. “Compliance is about the promise of security and comfort sold to us by powerful entities in times of vulnerability,” the group wrote, going on to denounce the “misleading untruths” of these entities, who want to “obey” a “vision of the narrow world”. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and public health compliance descending, some took this for an anti-vaxx message. Now that the song is out, the band is only complicating things. Check out the “Compliance” music video, which talks about a world in which people are forced to… wear masks. These masks are more Freddy Krueger than KN95, but a bit on the nose, don't you think?

A press release indicates that the video (inspired by Curler!) “follows three children wearing masks who destroy their future to escape a dystopian and oppressive world. A longer statement from the band on the song includes all of those right-wing culture war buzzwords: “in a bunch,” “freedom,” “independent thought,” “penned in, scared, and surrounded.” Additionally, the song is taken from an upcoming album titled will of the people, released on August 26, which includes songs such as "Won't Stand Down", "Kill or Be Killed", and "We Are Fucking Fucked". Now, maybe we're just radically misinterpreting here. But if we had to guess anti-mask groups… Muse wouldn't not be on the list.
