When can Microsoft Edge crashes occur?
The Microsoft Edge browser crashes periodically due to a lack of available resources or a large amount of processing activity.
We can solve the blocking problem by deleting browsing data and disabling browser extensions. Or end unwanted processes through task manager, among other measures.
Users reported several scenarios where Edge crashed, some of which are as follows:
- Microsoft Edge crashes when opening – If Edge crashes when you try to open it, you will need to reset the app to start from a new, blank slate.
- Microsoft Edge crashes when printing a PDF – When you try to print a document and your browser does not complete the action, it may be due to an internal error which can be fixed by disabling third-party extensions.
- Microsoft Edge crashes while typing – Since you cannot browse the internet without entering new addresses, try using the following PowerShell command.
- Microsoft Edge crashes while searching – If you cannot find anything in Microsoft Edge, it may be caused by a faulty third-party extension that needs to be uninstalled. However, if you need these extensions, try switching to another browser.
With that said, let's move on to the list of solutions to deal with Microsoft Edge crashing and get back to watching your favorite content on the internet.
How can I fix Microsoft Edge crashes?
1. Change browser
If you don't have time to follow the troubleshooting steps, install another browser on your computer.
We can happily recommend Opera as a primary or at least secondary browser. It comes with a variety of features and is incredibly reliable and stable.
The team behind Opera Browser has made it privacy-oriented with the built-in VPN, protection against crypto mining, and Crypto Wallet for secure transactions.
You have the option of sticking with one browser that crashes frequently and one that doesn't. Besides that, it comes with dark and light modes and battery saving features.
2. Run PowerShell
- Press Windows + X on your keyboard and select the Windows Terminal (administrator) menu item.
- Now write shell power and press Enter.
- Copy and paste the following command into the powershell window and press Enter: Get-AppXPackage -All Users | For each Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"
- Wait for the process to complete and then restart your computer to apply the changes made and put an end to Microsoft Edge crashes once and for all.
3. Disable your extensions
- Open Edge and click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and choose extensions.
- Now click on the three dot menu next to each extension you need to select Eliminate button.
Sometimes your browser extensions can cause Edge to crash. To quickly identify the culprit, you should disable all browser plugins and extensions.
Then re-enable them one by one. Once you have identified the culprit, you should permanently remove it from your computer.
4. Clear your browser cache
- Launch Microsoft Edge and click the three-dot menu in the upper right corner to choose Settings.
- Type Delete browsing data in the search bar. Then click on the Choose what to delete button next to Clear browsing data now option.
- Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files then click clear now. The Microsoft Edge crashing error should now be gone.
A cookie is a small text file created by a web browser at the request of a website and stored on your computer's hard drive. These files contain information such as the contents of a shopping cart or authentication information.
On the other hand, a cache is software that stores a website's data (such as text or photos) so that the web page loads faster the next time you access it.
5. Reset Microsoft Edge
- Lancer microsoft edge and tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner to choose Settings.
- Type To restart in the search bar, then click the Restore settings to their defaults option.
- Finally, click on the To restart to complete the process and fix Microsoft Edge crashes.
Sometimes the easiest way to fix software is to simply reset it to factory settings. When you reset your app options, all disabled apps, notification restrictions, default apps, background data limits and permission restrictions will be removed from your phone memory.
